Looks like another squirrel house build is coming up
As always I'm running late on projects and this is but one of them. I like to have the boxes up by now but well it will happen when it happens. It should have come down in the spring but I wasn't able to do it then and it has not been occupied all summer which is what happens when it is in this condition.
So lets start by seeing it on the ground and from the front:
The hole on the left side is their doing.
When you look inside you can see that the back is also in bad shape but against the tree so hidden from sight. On the left it is almost scratched/chewed through also. The front was OK, I guess they knew that was the front and did not try to expand the home in that direction.
Also you can see the plastic bag they found and brought home. Years ago they did not do this but the last couple of years we have been seeing it.
Here is a better shot of the right side:
And then the back:
The crack down the back is because I did not get up and loosen the lag bolts this spring and the tree grew.....
So it looks like a total rebuild this year. Sometimes I can do a clean out and put it back up and other times I have to replace some parts and then there are times like this where nothing is worth saving.
I do look through the nest, interesting to see what they found to bring in and some times there are skeletons in there.........
I've already posted builds of these so unless someone really wants to see it all again I will not cover the subject again.

Havahart makes nice durable squirrel houses.

Re: Looks like another squirrel house build is coming up
Garys idea of a squirrel house is more similar to mine.

You and Gary are just cruel. I love squirrels, usually pan fried with a little butter and mushrooms and gravy. Nice side of red potatoes too. 30 years ago, this time of year you would stand a good chance of seeing me strolling through town on my way to my favorite wood stand, favorite tool over my back just hoping to see a few before lunch.Dansmith wrote:Garys idea of a squirrel house is more similar to mine.

I must agree with Garys, Dansmith, and Moggymatt
Seen similar damage that Reible shows only In houses and sheds.
In fact I had a picture of a steaming pile of ashes that was once a home before the squirrel decided electtical wire was good to chew on.
When I had my roof redone this year the roofer specifically mentioned stand pipe protectors to prevent squirrels from eating the lead and causing leaks around the stand pipes. Something I fought for years before I learned from him they had covers that slipped over the lead cover.
I can not have bird feeders without all kinds of squirrel prevention protection.
Hate the fuzzy tail rats!

My favorite squirrels are the 1/2" thick road kill ones.
Re: Looks like another squirrel house build is coming up
nothing like spraying for them with a shot gun.

I have had holes in our soffit patched with metal and they tear it down every time , Beman makes a very good squirrel repellent in .177 and .22 cal.

A few years ago there was a news story about the wildlife coming down into the city. Deer, rabbits and various critters would chew on wood siding or anything outside. A painter in the area started mixing cayenne pepper powder in the paint and it kept the critters at bay.

Re: Looks like another squirrel house build is coming up
My wife is an avid squirrel hater. She keeps a .22 on the dining room table or next to the deck door to take them out any time she sees them. She told me not to tick of the woman with the gun when I called her Granny Clampett.
