Preventing Unwanted Rotation of the Cutter Head

A different thread in Beginning Woodworking ("Locking the Main Spindle") got me to thinking about this. When installing or adjusting blades in the jointer there comes a point when I want the Cutter Head to remain stable with the blade (cutting edge) at top dead center. In the past I have just clamped a heavy pair of vice grips to the shaft. The weight hanging down tends to overcome minor forces that would rotate the cutter.

A face plate mounted on the shaft could be used in much the same way as mentioned in that thread. Problem: The shaft is 1/2" in diameter while the face plate has a 5/8" bore.

Still just a thought. Something that I can play with with my shop remains in shambles.
