Broken Tool Rest, Need Replacement

Post by dzawacki »

Due to a mishap this past weekend, the tool rest stem snapped while I was turning. I'm in the market for a replacement tool rest for a ShopSmith 10ER, but I'm having trouble finding one. There is currently one for sale on eBay but the starting bid is $35 and an additional $18 for shipping and that seems a bit steep to me.

I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for aftermarket tool rests that will fit the ShopSmith 10ER, which needs a 3/4" OD stem.

Possibly, but not by myself or anyone I know.

I think it was a clean break. But I'm really looking for a replacement for the time being. Not planning to scrap the old tool rest, so maybe brazing it back together can be a future project.

Look for #7398 on http://www.ptreeusa.com/turn_tool_rest.html for an example.

A post for Pinnacle modular rests: https://www.amazon.com/Pinnacle-Post-Di ... dpSrc=srch

Looks like most posts are 5/8" or 1" diameter.

Roy, thanks so much! The Peach Tree #7398 looks to be what I need and then some for a great price.

I've been searching for something all day and now you've found it for me! I've gone and purchased it.

If you want to look at a modular system, I like the modular system from Best Wood Tools. http://bestwoodtools.stores.yahoo.net/tmotoresy.html

Brenda,

That system looks really nice. I'm just getting started with turning (that's where the mishap came in), so for now, I'll start with a basic setup to learn on and keep the Best Wood Tools system in my back pocket for when I'm looking for an upgrade.

I have a related problem with the tool rest that came standard with the Mark 7. Have only started turning in the last two months, so not really heavy usage to this point. I was repositioning the tool rest the other day and one of the plastic handles broke off. Wasn't applying much pressure so I assume it was defective. I can still use the rest, but am having to use a pair of pliers to loosen and tighten the rest into position. I have contacted ShopSmith twice by email but no response. Does anyone know if there is a replacement part for the handle and also if there are suggestions on getting more functional rest. This one seems pretty limited.
