Nova G3 Chuck - Black Friday deal?

Post by heathicus »

I'm thinking of picking up the Nova G3 chuck for the Shopsmith so I can do more and better turning. What are the chances of a good Black Friday deal on it from Shopsmith?

My crystal ball is out for repairs so I can't tell you. Darn thing fogged up and was hard to read the last while, maybe the batteries are dead??

I'd start pricing around, I've seen better deals the shopsmith offers but just make sure you compare like configurations and that you get the shopsmith and not the plain 5/8" adapter.

Here is a starting spot:

Shopsmith offers a more complete package but you have to decide if the jaws they offer are what you need and want, other wise just buying the jaws you need with the more bare chuck might be a better deal.

I got my G3 chuck on a special, I believe, 4-5 months ago. So I'm not sure if SS would run another G3 special this soon. Anyway, I've been enjoying it!

I like my G3 chuck, and I am also hoping for a good Black Friday sale so I can get a second one.

Touché with the crystal ball comment, Ed! I appreciate good sarcasm! I guess my hope was a recurring "Black Friday" deal that other people have paid attention to in the past, and therefore have reason to expect again. I also appreciate that Amazon link.

I have to admit I'm a bit lost on the jaws. Is there a guide somewhere that explains which jaws would be used for which purposes or in which situations?

The jaws are only circular when they are closed. The chuck can get the best grip on a tenon when the tenon is slightly larger than the closed diameter of the jaws. As the tenon gets larger, the jaws will only grip at the corners, so there are only eight contact points, instead of continuous contact. So to tightly grip larger, heavier items, you'll want larger jaws. And, of course, for smaller items, you need jaws that can close to that smaller diameter.

Here's more information than you probably want - http://www.docgreenwoodturner.com/holdingpower1.html

What would the pin jaws be used for?

I have a set for my Oneway Talon chuck, but haven't used them much. Here's some ideas -https://www.teknatool.com/product/nova- ... ssory-jaw/

I didn't find a "Black Friday" deal on the Nova chuck, but found a good deal on eBay and decided to get it as a Christmas present to myself. It arrived today and I installed it on one of my 10ERs and I really like it! I turned a couple crappy snowmen with top hats. I have a lot to learn, but it's fun.
