SS Power Station Question

Post by doug45601 »

I've ben bitten by the gotta have it Shopsmith bug and now looking at a used Power Station. The one I'm look at was made in 93 and I am wondering when Shopsmith introduced the Power Station and how many revisions they have been through and some basic info on the revisions themselves... Just looking at the thing, the only difference I can see is the legs are straight up and down compared to what I am seeing in SS catalog.

I know a new one is 549 + all the freight and shipping and tax... and what I'm looking at for a used one is $450.00 total. The math says it would be a saving to me at about 188.00

Should I spring for a new one or jump at a used one that appears to be complete and am told it works as advertsied.. 188.00 buys piece of mind I know and all the latest revisions included ,but saving 188.00 allows me to buy more stuff..

The lower price alllows buying more stuff only if everything is perfect amd the latest version. I have never bought a power station. I have purchased dedicated motorized stands for Bandsaw, Jointer and belt sander. My reason for doing so is an injury which left unable to lift those items safely. I am pleased with the motorized stands. I have also had the eeperience of buying used items that fell short of being as advertised. If at all possible I buy new. fjimp

I can't say as to if the current version is "better" then the "used" version, nor can I say the condition of the used one.

So what can I say? Well one thing is that shopsmith sometimes put things on sale. With that the $549.99 price would be somewhat less. Right now it would be 549.99 + 7% shipping + $20 (special truck shipment fee) or something like $608.48

I'm using the catalog infor from June so maybe things are different... if so adjust from that to current.

If the item were on sale at say 10% off or $494.99 then the shipping would be 23.49 + 20 or about $538.48.

15% = 510.98.

If it was a really big sale of 20% $483.48.

I have a rule of thumb that says I don't go over 1/2 the amount that a new one goes for. Using that rule says $275 + no more then shopsmith postage which at the sale price is $43.49 gives me a target total of $318.49. For me the used one you are looking at for the price you mentioned is not a deal.

Now some more value might be in the used one say it has the shopsmith casters or was in almost new condition... at least if it new from shopsmith you have a period of it being covered repair wise. All things to think about when making a decission.

The remain thing to think about is how fast do you need it??? If you wait for a sale at shopsmith you may also have to wait on their just in time ordering... The used one I'm guessing you can get right now so that could have some advantages, unless it has something wrong and you have to order parts once again having it in hand and having it working for you can be different things.

If it wasn't for you forum members, I would be lost.. Thanks for your inputs, I'm not in a hurry to buy a Power Station. Just thought It was a deal to jump on. Besides that, the SS Bandsaw I ordered a few days ago is backorderd for about 4-6 weeks so I can wait.

Does anyone know when Shopsmith will be having another big sale? Would like to get all the "stuff" I need while still young however... Won't be 60 forever with a BD around the corner!

Planer is also on my mind... So bring on the Sale!!

I agree with ED. When purchasing used, try to get the price close to one half the new price. You never know if it works or if all the pieces are there. Make sure of the shipping costs. Shopsmith has had a year end sale in the past and it should come out this month or the first of next.

Hi Doug,
SS has several sales throughout the year. They generally repeat each sale annually. For example, each January, they have a buy two get one free SPT sale]edit: Since it is on backorder anyway, you might want to cancel your Bandsaw order and wait 'til January. Then you can buy the bandsaw, the planer and one other SPT for the buy two get one free sale.[/I]

So as of today, I became one of thoes ebay hounds looking at SS stuff and just had to buy. Got a little eager and carried away and ended up with buying a used Powerstation..... and a used Power Stand!! Probably spent more then I should have on used stuff but heck, it looked like new items.. well kept... or at least cleand up real good....

Powerstation comes with manual and owner says used very little although is has a mfg ser # of 93 and the legs are straight up and down rather then slanted..

Power stand comes with the SS casters, belt guard, lower pully (double) but No Manual.

With the exception of the Planer power stand, are arn't they all the same with the only difference being in the pully configuration?? Since the previous owner didn't have a manual or knows the part #... guess I'll be calling SS for help as I want to mount a bandsaw.

BTW previous owner was using it for an old style Jig Saw so I know it only a 1/2 HP motor... All the stands look the same in the catalog to me..

Summing it all up: Powerstation, Powerstand, Casters.... shipped to my door for a total of 545. Although not new, it's new to me!

I have only one SS, a 510 purchased new at State Fair some years ago. The way I read your question is; "should I spring for a new one." My response: "yes"
I enjoy woodworking, I do not have skills as a machinist. I take care of my tools, but I don't enjoy rebuilding tools. So it comes down to your interests. If you can afford a newer or NEW Shopsmith, go for it. It is an excellent work platform, and I don't think you will ever regret the investment. If you enjoy the challenge of rebuilding machines, great. My neighbor up the street buys old classic cars (really old, in such condition that they look like they were buried or submerged for years) and totally rebuilds them. Great hobby, but not my thing. I like making sawdust, and really good tools make chopping and sanding things more fun. Just my opinion. Have fun.

I would have checked to see what the power stand is made to fit before purchasing it. Different ones are made to fit different SPT's. The size of the motor, the belt and pully set-up, the tool mounting set-up, and the speed can all be different from what you need for your bandsaw.

They are not one-size fits all like the Powerstation is made for with variable speed. Hope it works for your bandsaw like you want it too. Not sure it will since you said it was used with a jigsaw.

It's easy to get carried away with seeing the tools on Ebay for cheaper prices. But it also pays to investigate a bit before the purchase. If the seller couldn't tell you what the power stand was used with, I would have steered clear of it and waited until another came up for sale. They show up for sale on Ebay all the time.

At least check out the power stand before mounting your bandsaw to it. Hate to find out it runs to fast and the blade comes flying off of it and you get hurt. If its not the right power stand, you can always sale it on Ebay again, or find someone to trade with you who does have the correct one for the bandsaw.

Remember, the patients that you learn from woodworking should also be used when it comes to purchasing your tools.

-It is true that the power stands are not all the same but the more significant differences are rotation rate of the motor and power rating.
-When you check, if you find the rotation rate of the motor is incorrect, that can be corrected very easily by changing pulleys.
-The speed of the accessory is a function of the motor speed and the ratio of the pulleys on the motor to the accessory being driven. Any of the power stands can be used to power any of the accessories so long as the right pulley ratios is established.
-If you find that it is not correct for use with the bandsaw, come back here and post your questions (if you have any) and we can certainly help.
