Email will most likely not get a response. Furthermore, I will be real surprised if you are given any specifications. Shopsmith just does not publish that sort of detail.

As for specifications, it is true that Shopsmith does not give out certain technical details about manufacturing tolerances but they do usually give out operating specs. With the old
dust collector they gave out CFM and the particle size the various filters were rated for. This is essential info for a dust collector. It is akin to knowing the resaw capacity of a band saw or the maximum width of a board that can be put through a planer. I tend to think it is an oversight by them not to list the CFMs of this new dust collector, which I have to assume is higher than the old one given the new, bigger motor. It would behoove Shopsmith to provide this data and soon.

I suppose you are correct and I hope you are. Not listing specifications that a typical consumer normally needs is a show stopper.

I have sent 3 emails to Shopsmith over the last 10 days asking for the CFM spec for the new dust collector. No responses received at all.

My guess is there is no difference in the CFM given the model numbers. The original dust collector is Model DC3300 and is 330 CFM. The new one is Model DC330L. 330 in both model numbers.

Besides, motor HP has nothing to do with the CFM of a dust collector. What matters is the impeller diameter, the impeller design and the impeller RPM. If you have an impeller that will produce more CFM you will need a higher HP motor to run it. However, if you put a 1 HP motor in a DC3300 you will still only get 330CFM. The HP of the motor by it self has nothing to do with the CFM of the system all other things being the same.

Your answer that the 330L has the same CFM makes sense, but why did they bother to put in a motor with 2X the HP?

The real question here that needs to be answered is: What did Shopsmith do differently with the design? Does it actually deliver an increased CFM? or Did they simply incorporate a hurricane type collection system? I am inclined toward the later.

If the impeller was not altered, I see no reason for why there would be a need for greater HP.

If all else is the same the design change made it $200 cheaper. That is a significant difference.

Is a 'hurricane type' similar to a cyclone design?

To me what is added is a wein separator.
