Christmas Gifts

Since I hit a snag on my latest piece of furniture it is time to start the Xmas presents. This year I am doing kitchen stuff. Starting with four sets of salt and pepper mills and then pizza cutters, peelers and ice cream scoops and possibly a cutting board. It’s good for using up even the smallest pieces of scrap. I enjoy turning the s/p mills. Spindle work is just plain fun !

So that’s four pair down on the salt and pepper mills. Two more to go and that should do it. Then it’s on to the ice cream scoops and peelers.

What’s the red-toned wood? Padauk? Lovely color.

From the outside, the turnings with rings appear to be end-grain glueups (on the lighter wood). Are there tenons or some such hiding on the inside, for strength?

Which mill kits are you using?

The kits are from Woodriver. The red colored wood is Paduak that I had left over and then alder and a couple of mahogany rings. In the end I just used jam chucks and not the nova chuck. Once you have the jam chucks made it goes really fast. I mostly used scraps except for the tall Paduak ones. A little hint if you don’t have any scraps that will work go to HD and buy one of their 8’ kiln dried 2X4’s, cut it in half and glue them together. They make really nice blanks and it will give you enough 3”X3” X10” or 12” blanks for four grinders.

Did you just end grain glue the dark pepper rings in or do tenons? Beautiful and love the rings idea.

The rings are just blocks glued in. I go through the scrap bin and just start combining small blocks to get the correct height. I don’t turn the tops and the main body out of the same blank normally just because I am using up the smaller pieces for the tops. Jam chucks are a block of wood mounted on a faceplate with a tenon turned on it to fit snugly into a hole on the piece you are turning. In this case there is one with a 15/16” tenon for one end of the body and the other end is held on the tailstock with a conical live center. For the tops I use a 2” forstner bit to bore a 1/2” deep hole and then make a jam chuck with a matching 2” tenon to mount it on. The tops have a 7mm hole through drilled for the shaft after the 2” hole is bored. That is handy because you can use a drywall screw through that hole and into the jam chuck to hold it on better while you turn it. I will be back home this weekend and will post some pictures of the process. Currently I am in Orange County Ca. My daughter had our first grandson this morning at 0400 !
