Hello, I wanted to take the casing off my Shopsmith 10ER motor so I can paint it. I took the capacitor cover off as well as the plate for the wire and the 4 bolts that go through the casing, but I can't for the life of me get the casing to separate. Is there some "trick" to getting it apart, or is it just another part thats stuck together from 60 years of sitting around, and needs some convincing to seperate? It's a GE motor model number 5KC43JG27 by the way.

Before you separate the end bells from the body take a small center punch and place a matching small dimple on the body and the end bell at one end, then two dimples on the other end bell and body.
This will insure it goes back together with the same orientation to each other.
With the motor secure on a bunched together towel on your bench, use a small rubber or rawhide mallet to tap around the end bell where they join to loosen the bind. A metal hammer would compress the metal. Don't use one without a soft barrier in between.
Then go around it again with the rubber mallet, sort of wiping the head at an angle while tapping the end bell to move away from the body. In time it will separate.
If it has been painted over, it may be necessary to take an X-acto knife etc. to gently slice through the outer side of the mating surface joint first.
If you don't have a soft mallet, use an old belt wrapped over the area and a very small hammer.
Take your time. Take pictures.

Thank you for the reply. I was trying what you suggested, and I noticed something that I wanted to ask about. There is no edge on the caps to use a mallet on, but there are 2 small screwdriver tabs on both ends that are 180 degrees from each other (see the first pic), so I was using those with a mallet and screwdriver to try to separate the ends and I noticed that when I tried to separate 1 end and then moved to the other the act of trying to separate the 2nd end pulled the 1st back in, so the 2 ends appear to still be connected. From looking inside it appears that the motor's axle is attached to both ends. Also, I noticed a hole on the back side of the motor (the end where the wire comes out) and don't know if that is significant for separating everything (see 2nd pic). Thanks in advance for any input.

Well yes it kind of is because of the bearings. Try the non pulley end. The motor shaft should either pull out from the bearing or the bearing should pull out of the end bell. If not try to figure out how to apply penetrating oil to that bearing to break it loose. The hole in the end bell may give you some access.joer0952 wrote:Thank you for the reply.
