Where Are Shopsmiths Manufactured

Post by hdoilcan »

I see this posted on Facebook today.

“I worked for SS back in the mid-90s. The issue is that all the parts (at least back then) were manufactured overseas and shipped to Dayton for assembly. They used just in time delivery methods and really struggled to match supply with demand when there were peaks in sales. (I took over the sales team and we drove a quick 25% sales increase that screeched to a halt when production couldn't catch up - cancelled orders resulted and it was painful.) I'm guessing that the same is true today. From what I've heard, the Power Pro has been in short supply since it debuted several years ago. I think they're their own worst enemy when it comes to taking care of customers, based on things like this.”

Is this true? Are Shopsmiths manufactured overseas and just assembled here? Or are they manufactured in Ohio?

First, let me say I don't do FaceCrap. Oh, excuse me Facebook. Is that is what it is called? I don't do any of the other "social" media either.

Who is this guy? Lets see a name that can be a confirmed SS employee. Anybody can post crap anywhere including here.

Is it true? Maybe partially but without conformation it is only speculation. Yes, SS has apparently had problems but it seems like maybe they are behind them.

The poster talks about the 90's. We are a long way from that, sooo...

No, that’s another persons post.
I know you guys on here are very knowable Shopsmith owners and figured I’d ask if it was true or not. I thought maybe someone would have some more information they could share.

The serial number table sure appears to be accurate. I checked mine (because I knew approximately, but not exactly, when it was purchased) and it certainly made sense. Mine was built in September, 1982.
My dad bought it for me and I've loved it since the day I set it up. That was 35 years ago when I was 27. I remember attending a training workshop in Cincinnati and it was young me and about six really old farts. (Now I'm an old fart, but still using my Mark V.)

I would not be so quick as to jump on the individual who posted on FB unless you know who he is and that what he says is incorrect. The author said he worked for Shopsmith in the 90's.

As for whether or not the Shopsmth is now manufactured in Ohio or not. that depends on how you define "manufactured". There may well be some parts manufactured here but the major component of the PowerPro is from "offshore". The motors in the previous units were also from "offshore". Most bearings are from "offshore". Screws, bolts, nuts, washers, etc - who knows.

Made In the USA is a questionable statement, these days, no matter who claims it. Assembled and Distributed - maybe. My Pillow is Made in the USA. At least that is what I read on FB.

No. I was missing something: I couldn't see the screen well enough on my cell to answer what was really asked.

Sorry for the confusion.
