Identify Machine and are all parts present

Post by theweight »

Hello,

My asked me to sell this machine that he was given (never used it). I'm wondering if all parts are present as I don;t see many attachments. I figured someone here would be able to spot what's missing. As far as I know these are all the parts he has.

Also, is this worth anything?

Thanks in advance and sorry for all the pics.

NEVER apologize for 'too many pix'!

It appears to be made by Shopsmith Inc. and is either a Mark V 500 or a Mark 5. Most of the standard accessories seem to be present.

Only your market area will determine it's 'worth'. Do realize that the available market is quite limited. It is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It could be in better 'condition', but it is not very bad(a little cleaning up would make it look more desirable).

Where are you located?

JPG - thanks for the reply. My buddy did just locate the manual and it looks like you're on the money with your opinion as the Owners Manual indicates: Shopsmith Mark V Home Workshop System.

We're located in northeastern PA, just outside of Scranton.

For some reason I was thinking the drill press was missing but maybe that's an accessory that you add-on. Nice to know that all the parts are there. I hate to sell something with missing pieces.

The drill chuck(and maybe the key) is in the white box setting on top of the lathe chisels. The unit will hinge up and become a vertical drill press.

Thanks for your feedback!

Now that we have the manual maybe we can figure it out.

Check Craigslist or Ebay in your area. Those may help in determining what to list it at. One like yours sold on Ebay recently (local pick up only) in the Hanover PA area. You could spread the listing out over a wider area and into NJ to get more eyes on it.

I had never heard of Shopsmith and was looking for a used drill press. Shopsmiths kept popping up. I researched them and bought one used. Add the name of the 5 machines (drill press, lathe, tablesaw, etc) in your listing and folks not even in the market for a Shopsmith may decide it fits their needs. Looks like a decent starter machine. Good luck.

@theweight,

It appears that this must be an older 500. The lower saw shroud and upper splitter/anti-kickback pieces are different than I've seen. There should be a round silver plate on the left end of the motor housing (as you're facing the power switch) that should have the serial number. The serial number can be cross referenced at http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/serialnumber.htm to give you the year manufactured.

You do seem to have most of the standard accessories.

A rough price guesstimate is somewhere in the $200-400 range assuming that it runs well and the speed adjustment works (DO NOT CRANK THE SPEED ADJUSTMENT WITH THE MOTOR NOT RUNNING). It appears to be in good, clean physical condition which will help, but the age will work against you as will it being a 500 (rather than the more sought after 510s and 520s) and no special purpose tools (jigsaw, jointer, bandsaw, etc.). For reference, around 10 years ago I paid $300 for my 1983 500 with bandsaw and jointer, and $700 for a 1990's 510 with bandsaw a couple years ago.
