Walmart's Latest. . .Scam?

Post by db5 »

This one is with Sam's Club.

I got a notice last week from Sam’s Club that my membership had expired but they were going to extend it until January 10. What got my attention is that it was addressed to me Or Current Resident. I got my credit card receipt (yes, I keep that stuff) and the expiration date is 6/6/18. I verified this at the membership counter yesterday and then asked the clerk why I received the notice.

“They mailed those to everyone”, she said. She said she even got one after renewing her membership in November. I commented that probably a lot of people didn’t know their membership wasn’t expired and asked what she did when someone came in with the card to renew it. She said they were told to renew them so that’s what she did. I said I thought that was unethical and she agreed.

“So, why do they do that?” I asked. “Because they know they can get away with it.” That is a direct quote.

In June I will not be renewing my membership – unless I get if for free.

It would seem to me that when enough people like yourself bring this scam to the forefront, it just might appear on th national news.

I doubt it. If even Sam's employees get them and some friends in Texas I think this is just their latest unethical gimmick. Anything to stave off Amazon (Walmart) and Costco.

I think you just made a typo, but for clarification, unless something has drastically changed, Sam’s Club is owned by the same company as Walmart. :)

An annual 'renewal' begins when the current one expires. Anything else is simply dishonest.

I get renewal notices all the time for my wood working magazines long before they are due. They are always the great offers over the "News Stand/Cover Price". Those offers are normal. I just wait because the same offer is always available but every once in a while there is a better deal and I take advantage of it even though my subscription is not near running out. In every case it has just added on to the end of the current subscription.

I have never received a notice from anyone that said my subscription or membership or anything else was expired when it wasn't. That is curious other than that the person who proof read (OMG) the text missed the word "about" and didn't understand why this notice was being sent.

I would take with a grain of salt what any employee says on the floor. I doubt they have any clue what corporate says or does or what has happened.

A scam? I doubt. A mistake. Yes. As always Laissez-faire.

No typo. Walmart is trying to keep Amazon from taking its market share. Sam's wants to keep Costco out of its home territory (Arkansas and adjacent states).

That makes any of it 'right' or acceptable?

I'm a bit confused as to where the "scam" is. Wood Magazine has done this with every subscription that I have had. I would get an offer, even though my subscription had not yet expired, which I promptly renewed because it was being offered at a special price. It was not long until I had paid up subscription for about five years.

Now I might feel different if Wood quit publishing the magazine and they still "owed me" two or three years worth but they have not.
