Let me rephrase that! Ohm's law is simply E=IR only when applied to resistive circuits.

Add reactive components and trig must enter the equation.

The Shopsmith Mark 5 or V (depending on if it was made before or after 1980) motor runs at 3450 RPM. That is true for both the 3/4 and 1-1/8 HP motors. It would be difficult to find a lower RPM motor to replace it with. It has a longer shaft and very specific mounting points. The idea of changing pulley sizes between the idler shaft and the drive shaft is an interesting one but not possible inside the belt cover. There is not enough room inside the housing to change the speed with custom made pulleys. There already is a speed reduction between the idler shaft and the drive shaft.
