Holiday Catalog and NEW dust collector

I did a 3/4" wide by 1/4" deep rabbet in a 3/4" thick hardwood board with each dust collector attached to a Power Pro set at 3600 rpm. I could not discern a significant difference between the two. If someone else can show the pictures in a side by side shot that might help. The pictures with the new hose attached are the DC330L and older hose is the DC3300.

The only significant difference on the DC330L 3 port adapter that I see is the 4" to 4" splice that comes glued to it.

I think your dado cut test illustrated the saw dust issues are not a result of Dust Collector cfm, but rather the leaky saw guard, so previously created 'fixes' are still 'the answer'.

The sawdust leakage appears about equal with both dust collectors, so I agree lower saw guard fixes (dust deflectors) are the solution unless and until Shopsmith invents a lower saw guard that does a better job of collecting the dust.

I looked through the on-line manual for the new collector and I didn't see any reference to the efficiency of the upper filter bag. Did you get any literature that stated how many microns it filters down to?

I wonder whether the DC3300 will be discontinued. It is more expensive. Moves less air. It may have a smaller footprint. And it does have a bigger collection bag. EDIT: one major advantage of the new design is getting the motor outside of the collection unit. The old design, with the motor housing inside and between the filter bag and collection bag was a real source of sawdust build-up if you didn't religiously brush it out.

I would not expect there to be much difference in the amount of debris deposited on the carriage (as depicted in the comparison photos). That debris escapes from the lower saw guard. I have done modifications to my lower saw guard that nearly eliminates that debris. I keep hoping that Shopsmith would make some similar changes to the production design to accomplish the same.

I see this as a significant deficiency worthy of their investment. We definitely see from your comparison that that specific deficiency is not the DC3300 CFM.

Dust collection or the lack of it has been the topic of several threads. I found one that brings together potential solutions from several different forum members. One put together by mbcabinetmaker clearly demonstrates that collection can be much improved. Again...the lower saw guard.

redleg, would you please post a couple pictures of the 300L that show more clearly how the hoses connect to the dust collector.

Think of the DC3300 inlet rotated backward 90°. The inlet that points down on the DC3300 points out on the DC330L. The other two inlets still point out from the sides.

In this image from the online catalog the hood looks to be the very same item that is simply reoriented. Can't be, I know but that is what it looks like.

In another recent thread, it was shown to be the same part, but, with a 4" adapter glued to it. I will look for it.
