Planer Help! Cutterhead Shaft with No Keyway

Re: Planer Help! Cutterhead Shaft with No Keyway
Russ - I didn't think you didn't believe me, just posted the extra pictures in case they had other info I hadn't thought to share.
The motor pulley on there now is exactly the same as the one in the picture above. Although the motor shaft does have a keyway, and it is keyed. Maybe whoever had it before me got a pulley 2-pack.
See below for a picture of the motor label. The motor appears to be 1.5hp, so at least it isn't under powered.
If it was mounted to the stand later, are there instructions anywhere on how that procedure happened? Upon closer inspection, the motor doesn't look quite level. I'm sure the nuts just turned from vibration during use. If I'm doing all this, I'd like to make sure I have everything aligned properly so I don't end up back in the same spot.

Re: Planer Help! Cutterhead Shaft with No Keyway
At one time SS made Power Stands for all the SPT's. They all came with a 1/2HP motor except the planer stand. It came with a 1 1/2HP motor. The stand alone Pro Planer with cast iron table came with a 1 3/4HP motor. The power stands all had different part numbers. The stands them selves were all the same but they came with different pulleys, belts and belt covers depending on what SPT they were used to power, hence the different part numbers. Each stand came with an instruction manual.GregG wrote:Russ - I didn't think you didn't believe me, just posted the extra pictures in case they had other info I hadn't thought to share.

There is an upgrade pulley kit for the planer power stand. It is still available and contains steel pulleys. These are the same pulleys that were supplied with the Pro Planer from the beginning. If it were me that is what I would get for your planer.
http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... ulleys.htm
I don't have the planer stand manual because I have a Pro Planer but I do have a band saw power stand. The only difference in the manual should be the part numbers for the pulleys, belt and motor. If you can't find a manual I can scan in my band saw manual and send it to you. Just let me know.

Re: Planer Help! Cutterhead Shaft with No Keyway
I think what John has suggested is good advice.
You will be assured it will all fit.
I question using the same pulleys for both 1.5 and 1.75 motors, but mother knows best. Since the SS mount has a slower feed speed range it may all balance out.
I do not know if the 'steel' pulleys are stamped(most likely) and a while back folks were replacing them with cast iron pulleys.
The choice is yours, but I would use(and do plan to use) the cast iron pulleys when I stand mount my SS mount planer.

Re: Planer Help! Cutterhead Shaft with No Keyway
Hi Greg,
You said the pulley shown is the same as the motors so they are both 3-1/2"? If so changing the pulleys will improve your Planers performance. You can get the upgrade set from Shopsmith as John and I have suggested or buy individual pulleys as JPG suggests. Your preference as to steel or cast iron. These are pretty much stock pulleys, the same with the belt. One 3" for the cutter shaft and one 5" for the motor will bring the cutting speed up to 5750 RPM. The guard isn't in the parts list for the Mark Mount Planer but it may be the same one used on the ProPlaner.
Get the raised parts of the gouges on the cutter shaft cleaned up and you should be able to still use it. Be careful not to file down below the original surface level. Check the motor mount that it is solid, no broken, stripped or otherwise damaged parts and the motor is level. How is the motor running without a belt?
The manual for the Planer is available from Shopsmith but not the stand. Parts are available with drawings and lists from Shopsmith. I have the ProPlaner also so my manual is different. Most of the stand parts should be the same as John's Band Saw Stand. Yours doesn't have the SPT Mounting Base or the same pulleys, belt and guard. I do not know since I cannot compare them but your stand may be nearly identical to the ProPlaner stand.

I think the only other difference is the dimensions of the top of the planer stand are larger than the other stands. As I said the motor is different but I believe it mounted the same way as the other stands. Even the Pro Planer motor mounts the same as the power stands I think. I am on my way out but will check when I get back. I also seem to remember that the manual was the same for all the stands with just difference information for each of the SPT's. Maybe not the planer stand however. I will check when I get back.

Re: Planer Help! Cutterhead Shaft with No Keyway
OK, here is what I found. All the power stands (Major Accessory Power Stands) are the same. As I thought there is only one manual for everything except the planer stand. They were sold for the Jointer, Belt Sander, Band Saw and Strip Sander. They all had a different part number and were composed of 3 sub kits. The stand kit itself which was the same, the motor kit which was the same (1/2HP) and the pulley/belt kit which was different depending on the SPT. That drove a different part number for each complete stand. The SS mounted planer stand is not included.
However, my pro planer stand is identical to the power stand including the dimension of the top of the stand and the rectangular cut out in the top plate for the belt that is not used. They are all 13" X 16". The only difference is that the Pro planer has a set of leg braces just above the castors and it is black. The motor mounts in the same way as the other stands.
So from that there is no reason to suspect the SS mounted planer stand is any different. If the Major Accessory Power Stand manual is available on the SS web site it should help. The pulley cover is different and the way you tension the belt is different. On the planer stand you have to raise and lower the motor to tension the belt. On the other stands you raise and lower the SPT in the mounting base to tension the belt.

Re: Planer Help! Cutterhead Shaft with No Keyway
Ok, what you guys are saying makes a lot of sense. I ordered the shopsmith pulley upgrade, and it should be here in the next week or so hopefully. After doing just a bit of shopping, it didn't appear that buying from a 3rd party would be any cheaper, and I know the SS will fit.
My main concern was whether I needed special/different pulleys since my cutterhead shaft wasn't keyed. The motor seems to run great. The motor mount seems in good conditions, but is just a out of level. The nuts there seems to have moved due to vibration. In addition to being the wrong size, the pulley on the bottom is definitely warped, that was obvious when I ran it without the belt connected.
I'll file the reverse taper on the cutterhead to be flat, and attach using the set screw and a bit of loc-tite after it's been tested. I'll get everything lined up and level, then hopefully I'll be planing again in no time!
Thanks for all your help guys! I'll post when I get it up and running.

Re: Planer Help! Cutterhead Shaft with No Keyway
No you don't. The SS mount planer does not have a keyed cutter shaft. That is what you have so you are fine. Just make sure the set screw is tightened down on the tapered flat.GregG wrote:Ok, what you guys are saying makes a lot of sense.
