Planer Help! Cutterhead Shaft with No Keyway

John is also warning you not to file down the shaft too much. No need to file the reverse taper on the cutterhead to be flat. As I said before only remove the high spots gouged on the shaft so that the pulley slides on freely, but without any extra play. You don't want it to be off-centered by making the shaft smaller. Just make sure the set screw is tight as having it somewhat loose appears to be what caused the problem in the first place.

You have piqued my interest in the Planer differences the last few days and the ProPlaner Keyed Cutterhead shaft vs. the Mark Mount Reverse Tapered Flat Shaft is one of them. I can not tell you for sure if they are interchangeable but I would bet they are. The reason for the Mark Mount Planer having the reverse Taper is because it was designed to mount on the Mark V using a Power Coupler and Hubs to connect to the Headstock. Another difference is the table. When you have yours finished it will look a lot like John's and mine except, as John said, the ProPlaner comes on a black stand.

I found another item of interest for this subject late yesterday. Sorry I am slow at checking these things out but my Garage, which is where my shop is, has my Daughter & Family's Furnishings from their 1500 Sq. Ft. home in it while they are living with us. 30 feet wide by 36 foot deep and can't get a car in it. Unfortunately my Garage/Shop truly is a "habit-trail" right now.

On to what I found. A spare Planer Cutter Head I have, has both the reverse taper flat on the shaft and on the other side has the "key" cut to go into either a ProPlaner or Mark Mount Planer.

Still as long as the pulley goes on easily and fit snug after "cleaning up" the damage on the shaft of your's you should use it and not spend the extra money for a replacement as long as it works.

Sorry I am slow at checking these things out but my Garage, which is where my shop is, has my Daughter & Family's Furnishings from their 1500 Sq. I read that as the keyway and tapered flat being on the same end of the shaft, but on opposite sides.

Thanks BuckeyeDennis you are correct, they are on opposite sides of the same end of the Cutter Head Shaft. It had a Power Coupler Hub on it and seems to fit well but I do understand your concerns JPG when using a pulley on it. Will the tapered flat on the opposite side cause a problem when it is tightened down on the key. My Pro Planer is from December 1992 and I just went out and took off the belt cover and surprise it has the same shaft end as my extra. Odd though the pulley which can use a key is not and the set screw is on the tapered flat side. That's how it was when I bought it used about 2 and half years ago. I went through it when I bought it to make sure everything was in good working condition but missed seeing that. I have a feeling whoever originally put it together lost the key for that pulley and used the tapered flat instead. The motor pulley has its key and I will have to see if I have an extra key or buy one to make it correct.

Key stock is commonly found and is Inexpensive.(assuming it is straight)

Just checking back to see if you have resolved your planer issues. If you wish to change the cutter head there is a complete one, including the knives, for sale on eBay. It has both the flat and keyway for attaching a hub or pulley. The auction ends a week from Sunday on February 25th. I have bought items from this seller and have been very happy with the quality and service from him. There has been a lot of planer parts for sale recently on eBay and if the price stays low (the bid is currently $2.49) it could be cheaper than buying just the knives at $109.99 new.
