I have a router table for the bigger router ,,,but want a insert for the small one to fit the 500 table .

This is what I came up with.

Neat idea! I have a trim router that would work great like that. It even has good dust collection.

Aside from the fun of rigging it up, though, I’m not sure when I’d ever need a second router table. My Shopsmith standalone OPR has routers both above and below the table, so it’s plenty versatile.

You said that you already have another router table. When do you envision using this one?

If I did build one, I think that I’d make the insert in two pieces, sandwich-wise. The top part would mount insert-style, like yours. Then I’d make the router mounting block a separate piece, screwed on through the top insert piece. That way the router base could be removed from the top side of the table.

I have the dust collection attachment I just haven't put it on yet ,,, , . I hope this will allow me to make 1/4 inch slots for drawer bottoms and finger joints on small drawers . , then I can leave the other routers set up for other parts of projects ,rabbits, mortises , 2 and even 3 routers set up at the same time will make things easier for me and keep a small footprint in the garage.

I like the approach(and Dennis's) but am concerned re clearance to the trunion tie bar. I have a couple of roto-zips that might be usable(base mount would need to be figgered out).

Now about that 'strange' vise. Where and how well does it work? I am looking for one with little cash in my pocket. Have even considered making one with a large drill press vise mounted to wooden slides.

The vise came from HF ,,machines't vice ,,,,this particular one is,,,,,,, not,,,,,, a precision piece of eq by any means ,,,,,it travels from side to side and front to back , the stock can be shifted right to left in the vice for even more versatility , a good one is a nice piece to have and very accurate .

I did drill and tap the two narrow holes in the front for mounting the base unit .

I thought about using HDP but wasn't sure if it would warp or strip out since the base is mounted directly to the insert , ,, I have some HDP that warped,,, then again the wood may warp.

The router base mounting screws go in from the top ,you can see the 4 holes in the one picture, I was concerned bout the depth of cut and just went with the insert mounting idea,, I agree it may not be the most convenient way to secure the router base but I don't intend on using the table for anything else at this time ,so I shouldn't have to remove it very often, Other than the table itself when using the Miter saw the table hardly gets used , this just gives me one more use for it.
