Re: Trump Tax Cut
Dusty, sorry I couldn't point you in the right direction. I just plug the numbers in to TurboTax. Our deductions don't exceed the standard deduction. Haven't since we retired.
On a positive note, one of our sons is realizing an extra $50 per week due to the tax bill. Plus, the company gave raises for the first time in six years. In addition, he moved to swing shift and now gets a differential increase. I think I'll ask him for a loan.

Gene, you did nothing to apologize for. The only reason that I have been doing any real research on this is because we are in the throws of some major life decisions and I don't need financial surprises that I could avoid.
We are not financially independent but we are well enough off that whatever we make or lose due to tax changes is not going to alter our life style. I pay more attention to all of this so that when one of the kids (there are several) ask me for an opinion, I want to have one that I am confident about.
That $50 a week sounds good and I am sure it comes as a blessing to those who receive similar but we must all look down the road a ways to know what the next curve will reveal. There are some opportunities for that $2500 a year increase to cost in the long run.
Our politicians are all good at concealing or talking around those facts.
OKAY. I am gone again with no intention of returning to this discussion.

John, in no way did I mean to accuse you of anything, exceptjsburger wrote:OK, Steve believe what you want. Maybe his transgressions were not bad enough to get fired like the DC director. He took a demotion and is not in charge anymore.skou wrote:"Mr. Paxton has accepted reassignment as Assistant
Director at the Huntington VAMC in West Virginia."
(From the link John posted, above.)
John, if director Shulkin was REALLY trying to help,
Paxton's head would be on a pike! Instead, he got
ANOTHER chance to screw up Veterans' lives.
At least, he didn't get sent to Phoenix.

Here is a link to an article that says the VA is targeting it's worst performers first for fixes. There are 15 VA Medical Centers on the list. DC is on the list and the director was fired. Roseburg, OR is on there and that is where Paxton was removed from. He didn't get sent to Phoenix because Phoenix is also on the list so maybe it will be next.

posting the link to that article, which was welcomed by me.
Wasn't it 4 or 5 years ago, that Phoenix STARTED this whole
mess? And, we're STILL in the lowest fifth. (One star out of
five.)
If I'm not mistaken, the former Phoenix director was ALSO
transferred. And, Phoenix STILL has a NASTY issue.
I'm just glad the South East Valley clinic is GREAT!
(I make it a point to say that, every time I'm there.)

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.
Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.

When you claimed the gambling deduction and home mortgage interest deduction are eliminated you made a factually incorrect statement that shows you don't understand how the 1040 Schedule A deductions work against the standard deductions. You could be an expert on MSNBC or CNN!dusty wrote:WOW. It's time to withdraw from this discussion. Name calling and inaccurate assertions will not take us where we want to go. Adios.
1986 510, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, scroll saw, jigsaw and lots of accessories. Shopsmith woodworking bench too!

Beware of accusing others of making factually incorrect statements from within your glass house.P89DC wrote:When you claimed the gambling deduction and home mortgage interest deduction are eliminated you made a factually incorrect statement that shows you don't understand how the 1040 Schedule A deductions work against the standard deductions. How could you possibly know? In fact that was a major source of my professional frustrations that caused me to quit my job.P89DC wrote:You couldn't have cared less when Congress never passed a budget for Obama's 8 years and lived off of continuing resolutions whilst doubling the national debt.
No, not even close. There are various estimates for the so-called dynamic scoring of tax cuts' effect on the deficit. But no one places it anywhere near 100%, let alone above 100%.P89DC wrote:Tax reform will increase Federal revenues, everyone knows it.
This may actually turn out to be true, but then you'd have to say that Congress low-balled its estimate of debt increase.P89DC wrote:Tax reform is huge, it's not crumbs and Congress will extend the tax cuts for individuals when they expire.

'Snide' is not 'popular' when made seriously.
Most of us believe you were serious.
I have gotten in trouble in the past by not including "
" when speaking tongue in cheek.
Stick around, you will mellow.

Re: Trump Tax Cut
I'd like to see this thread brought back a year from now. By that time, I'll know if the new tax code helped me or not. I don't have any income that is subject to withholding so I have no way to know how it affects me until the year passes and I can run my numbers on the new tax forms when they actually exist.
