Window replace what to do

Post by GoNavy »

Just had my windows replaced and upgraded to dual pane, very old house still had single pane. So job was great windows look fantastic, except for one..72x50 inch picture window with internal muttens across the top 18x18 four lite squares. Now don't get me wrong window looks great install looks great..but this window went into a brick encasement and they obviously mis-measured or didn't prep it right, because it went in HARD...they must have made over 100 hammer blows to this window to jam it into place, oh they used a wood block, no damage to the frame (I guess) took like 20 minutes of beating on this thing, the screws were meaningless, this thing was jammed into place. Like I said it looks fine, but the internal muttens are separated by about 1/16 or so, obviously from the vibration of being hammered on for twenty minutes, but I didn't look at it before install, so have idea if it came that way from the factory or not. I have serious doubts if the seals are still in place and there is any argon gas still in between the panes.

I have several concerns here, if it came that way from the factory, then they have little to no quality control, bad sign, means they are poor quality windows and won't last. If the damage was done with install then what kind of company condones this kind of install as normal and whats going on with the other windows that I don't know about. This window has be under enormous pressure, I have believe at some point the glass is gonna crack not to mention the seal and argon gas which I believe is already gone so fogging is in my future.

Now I have been known to be PIA before, my standards are some times too high, twenty years ago I would be putting these windows in myself and not hire some one else and this would be a mute point, but at 60 yrs old and with copd those days are gone and I have to just watch others do my work. Paid half up front and the second final pay hasn't been made yet, waiting on the guy to show up.

So my question is ... what do I do

A) just shut the F up and be happy it looks good, pay the man ..wait for the window to fail and hope the warranty covers it.

B) Do I point out my concerns and see what they do about it and with hold payment if they don't do anything

C) Do I demand a new window and have it installed correctly

Any and all comments appreciated

edit: add on meant to mention these are WeatherBarr replacement windows, out of Ft Smith Arkansas, suppose to be quality windows

Option C is certainly what I would do. If the installer does not comply then I would contact the manufacturer. Separated mutton's should not be the norm I would think.

First, I would inspect all the other windows that were installed to see if the separation is common. This would give more or less cause for a grievance. If it is common I would complain with the window manufacturer for selling windows that fail quality workmanship standards. If it is not a common failure, I would go with B and follow up with C if they do not offer to replace it. I would also tell the big boss how they pounded on it before getting it into position as this would be my major concern. I would also offer half of the remaining balance since the rest of the windows were installed correctly and the rest when that window is corrected.

C

do not even question this just do it. its no big deal .

Fore a few months I worked at what is now Anderson windows , I built the big windows that they couldnt run on the assembly line , ,,,special widows ,, I doubt the argon has escaped,, thats the least thing I would be concerned about , the buttel tape and seaalant that seals in the argon is installed and tested long before the sash and any trim is added ,,, but if the sash is distorted it will never be right ,,,especially if the home settles any at all, call the manufacture first ,,, not the installer , then call the installer and let them know you called the manufacture and to expect a call from them about your concerns, that way it is on record with them for warranty issues,, our company had a team of professionals that wold replace a poorly installed custom windows and charge back the installer .

The window was either made incorrectly or measured incorrectly.
Should have never been installed from the sounds of it.

Option C.
I had all of my old windows years ago. I noticed on the picture window that it had deep scratches on the frame. they said they could sand them out or replace the window. I told them I paid for NEW windows not a repaired one. It was replaced.
