Hi all. My name is Scott and I have purchased a 1980 SS. It was running fine when I got it a couple months ago. It had not been used in several years before that. I had not used it for about a week and when I turned it on it just hummed and jerked a bit. I decided to tear it apart to clean and inspect. I took the very dirty motor apart, cleaned it up and ended up replacing the bearings, capacitor, drive belt and shaft spacer. When I put it back together, it ran on the bench but just hummed and jerked when reassembled in the headstock. Took it apart again and found the insulation on the motor wires was cracked and missing where it attaches to the coils. I figure this must be causing a short. I read in one post that someone cut the wires, soldered new ones on and shrink wrapped up tight as possible to the coils. Is this a good way to go or should I have someone replace the cord to the coils?
Part 2.....
When I took the back cover off the motor, the washers flew out. I have no idea what order they go back in. There are 2 flat narrow ones and 3 wider convex ones. I have searched the forums for a couple hours and have not found anything on this. Any ideas? Trying to upload a couple pics but having trouble with sizing....

I do not think you had/have a 'short' problem. As for the bare wires, I would apply insulating RTV to isolate them from each other etc.
I would say the start switch is not closing properly and is the cause of 'hum/no run'.
The washers are no doubt to provide thrust spacing. I do not know what order they were originally.
Stack them up on the bench and see what might work to provide bearing end play 'cushion'.

I have a similar vintage motor and ran into the same problem a few years ago. I got the following info from someone who is a frequent seller on ebay and rebuilds motors. The three wider ones are grouped together with the two concave ones on each side, and the two narrow ones go against the end casing. Or at least that's the way I do it. Only two of my wider ones are concave, and the wider one that is more flat is sandwiched between the other wider ones:
