Downloading A PDF

If I am using Internet Explorer, I can download PDFs with no problem at all. However, if I am using Firefox (with Windows 2000), I can not. What happens, after a very, very long wait, is I find myself in Adobe Reader with no file having been downloaded. At that time Adobe seems to work but has connection only to my other preexisting Adobe files.

Have you updated to the latest reader? On my xp machine I'm on version 9. It might also be good to check the version you have of foxfire, I'm still on version 2 because I understood 3 had some issues yet...

Another thing you can try is to use the right mouse button and tell it to load in another tab.

BTW you can have both foxfire and explorer up at the same time... and even add safari or what ever. I often do that when I'm having problems seeing pages that were written just for explorer in one of the other browers. I bring up explorer then drag the URL into explorer. Works the other way too.

Also, check out Foxit Reader. It's a free PDF reader that is very small and fast. It's not the system resource hog that Adobe Acrobat is.

I have both FireFox and IE on my machine and I can download PDFs if I happen to be using IE but if I want to download something from a source that I contacted using FireFox - get the described problem.

Dusty, DON'T download that Foxit Reader at this tme, it'll just confuse the matter.

WHAT version of Firefox and adobe do you have?

I don't know what versions I have but they were both updated just a few weeks ago. I had to update Firefox to get on the Sawdust Sessions which I did. Adobe offers updates whenever they become available and I updated the last time they offered.

I have some sort of a compatibility issue between Firefox and Adobe.

Operating Firefox, everything works except I cannot download PDF files.

IE works except that it is so blasted slow when operating with Windows 2000. On one of my daughters' systems, using XP, it works fine.

Microsoft used to have an outstanding help desk. Now everything is online and if you are not a seasoned user - you are out of luck. I am not a seasoned user.

Dusty maybe you need to upgrade your system, not many people are using 2000 anymore. I have a machine with 2000 on it but it has not even been powered up in a few years... things just were troubling, just like you are mentioning even back then. The only reason I saved it is that it has a server package installed that I was thinking about getting working again, now I don't think I will ever will... just getting to far behind all the new systems.

You could hint a bit as Christmas is not all that far away. Get one with an LCD display that pays for itself in only a few years due to power savings over the CRT. Beside the computer might be thought of as a woodworking tool, think of all the time you spend here and other woodworking related places...

If you want to check versions it is normally under the "help" and shows as "about ....".

Another option that often sidesteps compatibility issues is to right-click on the .pdf and select Save as rather than Open. That way the file is saved to your system and then you use your reader.

Ed, you are probably right on. Windows 2000 is getting close to ancient and should probably be replaced. It just scares the daylights out of me to think about transferring everything I have on that computer. Some of which, BTW, may not be compatible to the new system, whatever it might be.

I have two laptops with the same OS. Just can't be frugal anymore. Everything becomes outdated before you can wear it out - except American made cars.

I guess this is why I love my Shopsmith. I don't seem to be able to wear it out and I can still get factory support.

beeg is probably correct that installing FoxIt with Adobe Acrobat probably isn't a very good idea. But I can say that I am an IT professional with many years of experience and my professional opinion is to uninstall Acrobat and install FoxIt. FoxIt is small and lightweight while Acrobat is huge and is a system hog. And FoxIt gets along nicely with Firefox and IE.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!
