Shopsmith is new to me .. came from my Grandfather. Interested in fixing it up to help me with my woodworking Projects. Got to learn all the tools and accessories still, so many questions to come.

Anyone know about year of manufacture?

Any physical copies of handbook, or just the digital I saw lined in the Maintenance section ?

Any great helpful hints or tips would be appreciated.

Convenient ways to hook up a sander to take the sawdust ?

Welcome to the forum. Post pictures so we can see what you have. Many helpful people here.

Your machine was built in 1951. User manuals are available on eBay fairly often.

Post pictures and ask questions.

I don't know which digital copies you are referring to but in http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/viewt ... 90#p185690 you will find all three fully restored manuals for the 10E and 10ER plus the fully restored 1953 Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone (The 10ER Bible if you will) which represents over 2 years work, free.

I have the originals and I would stack up the restored copies against any original I have seen.

There are a few scanned to PDF poor quality images out there as well.

That's why I restored them. They are all free.

Some of the 70 year old originals are getting brittle.

Some of the 'Copies' you can buy on eBay are just that - 2nd generation photocopies of weak originals at a premium price. They are sold as 'original copies'

Welcome, and congratulations on acquiring your Grandfathers 10ER.

If you put the digital files on a USB drive and take them to the library or some place like Staples, you can print out a hard copy. Most photo copiers these days have a USB port and can print out .pdf files.

First though check and see if there is a stash of original Shopsmith documents in your Grandfathers files.

The first edition of Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone (1953 - McGraw Hill) was written for the 10ER, all later editions are for the Mark V's. It will show all the set-ups for the different functions. As Everett mentioned there is a beautifully restored (by him) digital version on his drive. You can often find reasonably priced, original copies of this book on ABE books.

As Ron has said you can find copies of the book Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone online for sale but use caution if you want the original showing the Model 10ER. I have bought several copies of the different editions. I have found many ads incorrect and more often this is the case with the 1st Edition. It is easy to find a later edition and get it in your hands for less than $10. Real 1st Editions usually sell for quite a bit more. The 1st Edition was published in 1953 by McGraw-Hill, copyright 1953 by Magna Engineering Corporation and is the only edition using the Model 10ER. It is a blue hardback book with a bluish-gray dust cover. It has 9 Chapters and 283 pages. Happy book hunting.

As I stated above, you can have the fully restored 1953 PTWFE absolutely free, and indeed that is the cover you want if looking for an original copy.

While there, you can also have the 10E Preliminary Manual, the 10E Published Owner's Guide and the 10ER Owner's Guide, each containing significant additional information, photos, expanded active tables of contents and more.

One of the worst shape

Your Shopsmith looks like it can use and benefit from some TLC. Getting things moving again will make it a happy machine. It is in no way close to a basket case or near the one in worst shape I have restored. The PDF is one of the worst shape machines I have restored. I am retired and daytime during the week or Saturday morning is the best for me. I will be pretty busy now through the 12th of March though.

I did notice we have neglected to address one of your questions from your first post.

If you are wanting a way to do that for the disk sander it is easy using the dust collection chute for the Mark V 500 and a steel sanding disk.

One of the advantages of the Shopsmith tools is the Model 10's and Mark series machines all have the same size 5/8" reverse tapered spindle and the same quill diameter. It does not mean everything is interchangeable but a lot of accessories are. We can set up time to get together at your shop to go over your 10ER and time at mine to look at what is possible with a Model 10 and various accessories.

Addition - (added back here from a later post about the PDF above) I have noticed a number of people have looked at the 10ER "basket case" S/N R57376 I restored and may be interested in some details. I purchased it for $70 in January 2016. It did not have a bench and was missing some parts, Fence, jig saw pieces and others. Other parts like the Quill & Pinion were to rusted and the Quill return spring was broken and had to be replaced. I replaced the power cord and switch since original ones are generally to brittle and unsafe to use. It also has new bearings and runs like a champ. It was completed July 6, 2016 and later sold as shown in the finished photo for someone else to enjoy woodworking with it for years to come. Giving new life to these older Shopsmiths has been my goal.
