Arbor run out

Post by GaDustDawg »

Hey guys. First time to this forum;long time woodworker. Recently dug out of storage a Mark V that I bought new in 1984. Has less than 10 hours use. Last time I ran it; I was drilling a newel post with an extended spade bit that went out of control and bent at the junction on the shank of the bit. After that; the arbor had a definite runout. Now I have replaced the entire quill (dbl. bearing), but I still have the same wobble problem. I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

With a new quill, as you report, I would not suspect the quill. Double check the drill chuck and the drill bits.

How are you checking run out and where?. A good dial indicator will tell you for sure.

Runout is a specific measurement that can be quantified in a number of ways. Arbor runout is directly related to the spindle runout of the quill assembly on which arbors mount.

In the thread Shopsmith Large Format Drawings, Illustrations and More under My Google Drive in Adjustments and Alignment folder, take a look at the document titled My Method to the alignment process.

https://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/view ... 90#p185690

In that document I define a method (certainly not the only method) to check things including run-out. It is purposefully a text document to get you to think about what “is inside the box” and how to verify it. It really helps to discern what is involved.

There is a companion document titled “What Can a Single Crosscut tell you” that will help you confirm alignment of the Shopsmith or practically any other type saw you can envision. It is quick and easy to do.

Does your Drill chuck look like or is close to the one pictured here? If not, does it use an adapter to attach it to the quill? Adapters can get bent. I have an Original Shopsmith adapter for the Jacobs 33B chuck first used for the Model 10E, before Jacobs made the 3326 Chuck specifically for the Shopsmith tools, that is bent. If yours is like the one pictured (a Jacobs 3326 style) check to see if any of the 3 jaws are damaged causing bits to be miss aligned. You may need a new Drill Chuck.

That ain't either a Jacobs nor a 3326 chuck. Manufacturer(source) is unknown to us. "style" is accurate. But then most keyed drill chucks are "Jacobs style".

All the other comments are spot on!

To check jaw runout/wear, install a 5/64" twist drill bit(or drill rod). If it will not hold 5/64" securely the jaw is worn or otherwise damaged. Wobble indicates runout quite obviously even if not so the actual source obviously.

I really fail to understand how one could possibly bend a 10ER adapter for the Jacobs 33B chuck. Where is it bent?

The pictures show the Jacobs 33B with 10ER adapter on the left. The jacobs 3326 chuck in the center and the SS branded chuck of unknown manufacture on the right.

The set on the left is the one I am talking about, the Jacobs 33B with the 102-47X Chuck Arbor. It is bent slightly at the base of the threads just enough to through it out of alignment. It's from one of three that I have which came from Model 10E's I have restored. Found it was bent when checking alignments after reassembling. Have also found two quill spindles that were bent.

Wow, I can't imagine how that could have happened in normal use. Bent quill spindles a are a little different and have known to be bent.

I'm guessing it was not normal use.

Yes like using the adapter on another threaded item where the threaded portion of the adapter bottomed out in the hole before the two flat surfaces mated.
