Sorry, does that mean it's not needed?

Pretty much. However with the splined drive sleeve requiring grease, the dust shield is desirable.

Re: Quill stuck and motor screech
Grease? Grease on the splines? I guess I failed to read instructions again. Where do I read to learn what sort of grease? I have never greased mine.

Not to worry Dustydusty wrote:Grease? Grease on the splines? I guess I failed to read instructions again. Where do I read to learn what sort of grease? I have never greased mine.
On Mark V's the nylon coupler on the drive sleeve serves that function.

Re: Quill stuck and motor screech
If you are going to replace the quill to get a Double Bearing Quill you will also have to replace the drive and idler shafts plus the upper belt. Basically a Gilmer Drive to Poly V Drive upgrade. These parts do not fit each other to be able to mix sets.

Re: Quill stuck and motor screech
For Gilmer Drive machines there is the option of getting a modified 2 bearing quill from Skip Campbell, MKC tools. https://www.mkctools.com/mark%20v%20parts.htmchapmanruss wrote:If you are going to replace the quill to get a Double Bearing Quill you will also have to replace the drive and idler shafts plus the upper belt.
