Hide glue

seen this on youtube and thought I would give it a try.

while I was out today I found a small crock pot at the salvation army for less then 5.00 went to wally world and picked up some raw hide bones ,7.00 going to make a pot of hide glue and test it out . its brewing as I type , I seem to recall actual raw hide made the old fashion way,, scraping the hide and drying it had more gluten ,, going to test the holding strength and compare it to some other hide glue I have .

If this works out like they say I will be impressed .

I've been using hot hide glue for a little over a month now and there's a whole lot I like about it. I'll be interested to find out how your experiment works out.

this could take a while to get it right, I fell asleep , woke up and the pot had a slow boil , not sure if it will hurt the batch or not , I poured it out on to a cookie sheet , it is set up like a gelatin and starting to harden but it seems to be taking a while ,,, I started the second batch and turned down the heat a little more , this batch seems to be thicker .. I can see this is going to be one of those things where accurate ,, water ratio to raw hide measurements will be a plus. first batch I filled the pot about 1/2 way and added water just to cover . 2nd batch a little less water . If this works I think I will just use it straight from the crock pot.

I have seen that on the shelf ,,,and in fact was the reason I want to try making it the way my great grand parents did ,,,

I awoke this morning to find a nice thick pot of glue like I remember in the wood shop years ago ,,, It appears too much water may not be a issue since it will just evaporate out, the chunks I put on the cookie sheets are starting to dry out . I tried it on a couple pieces of cardboard serial box last night , tried to tear it apart today and the cardboard tore ,,,

It says it has to dry now for 12 hrs or so until it gets hard just like the packaged stuff .when done here I should have at least a quart and 1/2 to 2 quarts dried glue.

As long as I keep adding rawhide it should cook down to make a lot of glue.

I would post pictures but so far every thing is working out as in the video.

I have played about with hide glue a bit last year. I got the Pearl Hide Glue from Lee Valley. http://www.leevalley.com/us/wood/page.a ... 2965,20002

It looks like their prices are WAY better than at Woodcraft. Also note the higher the gram strength, the faster the setup time.

today I made up a small frame and stretched some plastic window screen across the top for drying, it seems to help dry the glue from both sides . when you rub the glue across the top it does help break up the pieces .

Thanks Ron. I am a big believer in hide glues, particularly hot hide glue. It is all I use now and it’s been that way for five or six years, maybe more.
...... but then you know that. :-)

nice job ,, is that a mahogany veiner ? and what is your mix ratio ?

Tonight the glue is dried to a golden yellow dry and crunchy mix just like the store bought ,I was surprised how much weight it lost ,,, I took the drying frame and propped it up a few feet from the wood stove in the path of the fan , it seems to have made drying faster .
I cant wait to begin testing this out and hope fully use it on my next project .
