Downloading A PDF

beeg is probably correct that installing FoxIt with Adobe Acrobat probably isn't a very good idea. But I can say that I am an IT professional with many years of experience and my professional opinion is to uninstall Acrobat and install FoxIt. FoxIt is small and lightweight while Acrobat is huge and is a system hog. And FoxIt gets along nicely with Firefox and IE.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Heathicus, my thought was lets correct one problem before maybe causing another. Dusty's problem in Firefox is, the PDF seems to download, but doesn't open it. When he downloads it in IE, it's fine. I'm thinking he doesn't have the Firefox plugin for adobe or it's a setting in Firefox.

you might check firefox under
Tools / Options... / Contents
then under File Types, click on "Manage" and
scroll down to see what your system is set to use for pdf files

if there isn't a pdf line, then firefox just doesn't know what to do with it and you need to install a plug-in for adobe reader or one of the competitors

if there is a pdf line and it is set for an Adobe Acrobat older than 9.0, you could try doing an upgrade to the current version with the hope that when it installs the plug-in updates that it will fix the firefox without breaking the IE. mine does say adobe acrobat even though it is adobe reader that is installed.

as a different approach, I use a firefox plug-in called "PDF Download" that helps to handle the way that firefox handles pdf's. it makes it easier for me to download the pdf and then I can open it with whatever I choose.

in terms of the operating system upgrade: the transition from win2k to winXP is pretty straight forward. switching from win2k to vista is much more challenging. I have yet to meet someone who used win95 or earlier who likes vista. I am hoping to hold out for win7 for my work machines

Dusty - I had very similar problems with PDF files and firefox until I went to Firefox's help site. If you look in your bookmarks pulldown menu while in Firefox you should see Mozilla Firefox. Submenus in that include a help and tutorial option. Click there and then type in Adobe PDF issues or something similar and you should get several file choices that will explain steps to rectify the problem. I did that and it worked. BTW I am using Win XP professional on a laptop. Hope you get this solved.

Well, other than discover that I have two copies of Adobe Reader 9.0 on my computer (on two different hard drives), I no longer have a problem downloading and reading PDFs using Firefox.

I have initiated Adobe Reader from both hard drives and they both seem to work fine and both seem to operate the same.

Since I can not spare the unnecessary use of 50 meg of memory space I have uninstalled one copy.

I really hate it though when a problem seems to go away and I do not know why. I'd like to think that an auto update feature kicked in and an old version of Adobe Reader was updated but I have no reason to believe that happened.

I have a copy of Acrobate Reader 5.1 on my computer also. Now I need to determine if I should uninstall that as well.

YES to uninstalling the old acrobat reader. Fact is if I had the reader exe. downloaded, I'd uninstall ALL the different readers. Then make sure it's out of all the program files. Then reinstall the ONE reader on the C: drive.
Having two different adobe 9.0 on two drives probably caused confusion, and you couldn't see the PDF.
