Quill side will not turn
Hey there folks! I have a Model V that I have had for many years (love it). Tonight as I was in "horizontal boring" mode, the hole saw stopped cutting while the accessory (bandsaw) side continued to have power. I suspect I will need to tear open the headstock to find the issue but I wanted to ask if this is a common issue and someone can offer some advice. Looking at the headstock diagram (http://www.shopsmith.com/service/headst ... iagram.htm), I am thinking I probably need to check part 57 or 59. Part 56 is $135 so my luck, it will probably be at least that much. Any thoughts on this? This pooped out at a most unfortunate time as I am trying to finish a birthday present for my grandson.. Surely you did not advance the quill too far(more that 4.25").

Did the spindle turn after the quill was retracted back into the headstock? If so check set screw part # 44. It is there to stop the quill from coming out too far. If that is not the problem then, as JPG suggests, check part # 57 the Drive and Ring to see if it is stripped out. It is the plastic part that the end of the quill's spindle goes into that is connected to the back side of the drive shaft. As stated it is under $10 plus S&H. It is highly unlikely you stripped out metal parts.

I had a similar problem on my Shopsmith a few years ago when I was doing some heavy routing. I took mine apart and found some broken parts. I ordered new ones from Shopsmith but don't remember what parts I needed. I put the new parts in and it worked great again.
I suggest you pull it apart and find out what it needs before you order parts. If you guess and don't get it right, you waste more time and money than if you look at it the first time.

Agree with JPG. The only two things it could be is the set screw allowed the quill to become disengaged from the drive sleeve or the drive sleeve stripped out. The drive sleeve is the most likely culprit. They are easy to replace and cheap. Order two. If you have an older model that still has the single bearing quill it’s a good idea to replace them periodically anyway. The run out on the quill shaft increases as it wears and a new one will really tighten things up.

Thanks folks for the reply. I talked with a local friend of mine who used to work for Shopsmith, and he directed me as well to the "Drive and Ring for Headstock" that I believe is being described above. When I pulled out the quill and the drive, I see that the ridges on the inside of the drive appear to be a bit worn. I will put in an order for a couple part number 514083 (hopefully that is the right one). Thanks again. Sam
