Today in the shop (YAWP)

YAWP is yet another weed pot. Today's turning was a small chunk of wood I found in the neighborhood after it was left by the brush pickup people. Small enough to not fit well in the bundled brush it must have fallen out when they picked up the pile.

I'm thinking some sort of maple and freshly cut. It had two chainsaw cuts in it which I had to turn out, should have taken a "before" picture but I didn't.

The wood is really wet, I think fresh cut things in the spring are more that way. When I was cleaning up the shavings the concrete floor had a damp spot when the bulk of the mess was.

The necessary pictures are here to prove it happened.

Now all I have to do is wait for the cracks to form. I can see one starting already but it will take several days for the process to really get going since the wood is so wet.

If I think of it I'll post later photos with nature having taken is course.

Same wood pile, same looking bark, turns the same so I have to say that this is another weed pot from the same tree. This had a fork in the branch so I though maybe I could make that part of the finished turning.

How ever I didn't like how it looked so I just kept on turning.....

Then to round out the day I had another branch that I was going to cut in to disks and dry but save two pieces to turn. One is drying, the other I turned. Again this wood is really wet. More or a sap in this one and my hands were quite a mess after handing the cut disks. None the less I went ahead and turn another weed pot.

The result is here, still on the lathe but I think you get the idea.

Mostly playing with shapes and having some fun. Since you never know what the end product will look like it doesn't pay to spend too much time getting things more perfect or classical looking. It is just free form.

BTW it was very difficult trying to use carbide tools due to how wet the wood was. I've not had that problem before. Build up just below the cutter that would prevent a cut to start and then it would pop off and in would go the tool......... Well it was a learning experience.
