1956 Shopsmith Mark V Greenie wiring Help

Hey,

I am brand new to this forum and the world of Shopsmiths I am restoring my grandpas old greenie that I inherited and I am just about done as I went through the motor and have replaced the power cord. The wiring has me a little stuck. I have 3 wires from the motor that go to the relay and the capacitor(as shown). Originally he had a two wire power cord and I replaced with a 3 wire and have the ground going to the motor housing. The shopsmith have an on off on toggle and I am trying to figure out where the yellow wire that tees off the relay goes? As well as the bue/greenish wire from the capacitor that tees off? On my new cord I have a black and white wire that need connected in the circut and I grounded the green on the power cord to the motor housing. I am needing help on where to connect the wires from new power cord to tie in with the toggle switch, capacitor and relay...any help would be greatly appreciated. I have seen some diagrams but they do not show for the older greenie style with a three screw on off on toggle.

Before I answer this, why do you have an on-off-on switch?

It can be wired two different ways depending upon your intent. I recommend only one position turns the motor on and the center and opposite throw are 'off'.

You did not mention the third motor wire which I assume is/was red.

Consider the 'yellow' wire to be a discolored ancient white wire.

Consider the 'bue/greenish' wire to be a faded ancient black wire.

I apologize. Yes I have a red wire from the motor as well. Thanks for the insight. So from the relay I connect the yellow (white) wire to the toggle as well as the Blue (black) wire to the toggle with the white and black wires from the power cord. White with white and black with black I would assume, correct? My last question is on the toggle switch and I could be wrong their are three screws a top and offset middle and a bottom screw. I assumed it was an on off on. On the lever it will click up, middle (neutral) and click down. Where should I attach the white and black wires on the toggle? Do the black wires attach to the top/bottom terminals? White wires in middle? I just want to make sure I get it correct. Thanks again and I am excited to join the forum and start some projects soon.

There are two 'sets' of top/middle/bottom terminals.

The white wires go on one set(side).

The black wires go on the opposite set(side).

The power cord wires go to the middle terminals(white on one set(side), black wire on the other set(side).

The motor wires go on the corresponding top or bottom terminals. The location(top/bottom) determines which extreme position of the toggle causes the motor to run.

It has one screw down terminal on top, one screw down terminal in the middle (slightly offset) and one screw down terminal on the bottom. It looks like my grandpa had a single wire up to the toggle and a bridge wire to the top and bottom terminals with no connection to the middle. This seems off to me. Currently I have the white wire from the relay and a white wire from the power cord. I also have a black wire from the capacitor and a black wire from the power cord that need connected. I took the green wire from the power cord and attached it to the motor housing as the original cord was really worn/cracked and unsafe. My grandpa had it until he was 96 years old and bought it new in 1956 so not a bad run for it, but I also wanted a ground as well I just want to make sure on the 3 screw toggle I hook it up right. If I only have those 4 wires (2 black,2 white) and three screws on the toggle...which goes where? Do the two white wires combine and connect to the middle, top, or bottom? I would ask the same with the black wires. Thanks again for everyones help. This has been a long project with completly repainting, cleaning and replacing several pieces so I am excited to be close to being done. After this, I am just waiting on the speed dial that a gentleman in Califorinia is putting in a metal insert gear as the aluminum gear was shot.

If you have a switch with three terminals and the toggle has three positions then you have a single pole double throw switch (On-Off-On). You don't need that but it will work. You have connected the ground wire of your new cord to the motor frame. That is good. Now connect the white wire from the motor and the white wire from the power cord together with a wire nut. They do not go to the switch. Next connect one of the black wires (motor or power cord) to the center terminal of the switch. Connect the other black wire to one of the end terminals of the switch. It doesn't mater which one. The only difference will be weather up or down is on.

This will work just fine but you have the extra switch position that does nothing.

I would replace the switch with a 2 pole single throw switch. Then you have just On and Off. Two terminals at one end and two terminals at the other end. Then the white and black from the motor go to one end and the white and black from the power cord go to the other end, colors matched.

But, again, the switch you have will work just fine when wired as above.
