No rotation with quill extended

I searched and found a couple of threads that sounded like they addressed my problem, but didn't really do it. Hopefully I'm not asking something that has been asked and I just missed it.

Mark V - mid '60's era. I was using a hole saw mounted in the press vertically to cut some round blanks. After about the 7th one, the quill stopped turning as it was extended to the material to be cut. I took the motor cover off the back end and blew out a ton of saw dust from the inside. From what I can see without completely disassembling the headstock, everything looks pretty clean now but I fear there is something up in the top portion that I didn't get. The belts are old, but this thing was working beautifully till today and they aren't cracked or show any other signs of wear.

What should I be looking at?

With the belt cover off, manually rotate the quill shaft.(attach a sanding disk or faceplate to provide torque) Are both belts moving? The poly-v belt is observable from the top of the headstock, and the motor belt is observable at the motor pulley.

I am unclear if it rotates "until extending to the workpiece", but does rotate correctly when retracted?



Is it possible the belts are slipping(quill shaft is 'trying' to rotate).

Thank you WLM. I'll take a look at those belts.

The quill does turn normally when retracted. The hole saw does put the machine to quite a bit of work. It stalls quite frequently and requires backing out and reapplying to get through the material. Does the same thing on my stand a lone drill press, so I didn't think a lot about it.

Is it the motor stalling, or is it a belt slipping.

Sounds like the grey plastic coupler is stripped at the end of quill travel. Fairly easy to replace, it connects the drive to the quill.

Sounds like your drill bit is dull. Drilling blanks should not cause that much torque. Probably stripped the coupler on the quill out towards the end. Pretty easy to fix.

LOL - Sorry JPG, guess I didn't look at that screen close enough.

I'm sure my holes aw is dull. I don't think I have ever seen one sharp after the first hole.

I don't see anything stripped. I"m going to try a couple of new belts, a good cleaning and see if that does the trick. If not, I'll be back here in a week or so!

Still working on this. My parts got back ordered. I decided to put the old belt back on after a good cleaning and to see if adjusting the poly v belt would keep it from slipping. While doing that and watching some videos on all of it to get it done, I came across another question. My quill has the plastic/nylon drive piece. That part is pretty much attached to the quill and not staying on the poly v belt shaft. So, when you extend the quill, the drive just disengages. I assume that that plastic/nylon drive piece belongs on the poly v shaft. Am I correct or just looking at the mechanism incorrectly?

That coupler should be very firmly attached to the drive sleeve. It has a strong spring that grips the drive sleeve at a groove in the drive sleeve splines.

It sounds like the coupler has slipped out of that groove. The end of the coupler should be back almost against the bearing.

I am assuming the coupler is moving 'out' with the quill and is disengaging from the drive sleeve.

You need to get the coupler firmly onto the drive sleeve. The coupler should not move out when the quill is extended nor in when the quill is retracted.

The splined quill shaft should move in/out of the coupler when the quill is retracted/extended.
