If you love Barred owls then check out this thread
I was back out at the barred owl nest today, they were quite active in the nest and it seems to be getting crowded in there. It will not be long before one of them leaves the nest, the two larger ones could either or both leave soon. The youngest is a bit to young yet.
Mom was setting near by taking a well deserved (I'm sure) rest:
Here are a few with the three of them:
I put up two videos at you tube:

Enjoy!

Nice pics, Ed!
We definitely have a pair at our place; my wife heard and saw them together yesterday.
I just went outside a few minutes ago (8 pm) and could hear them hooting up a storm! Then one took flight and I was able to watch him/her (too dark for photos).
We still haven't spotted their nest, but I am really hoping to catch a glimpse of the little ones!

The mom does a little call when she is near the nest to I guess let the little ones know she is around. I'll try and find a video with the call so you can hear it, that might help you find the nest.algale wrote:Nice pics, Ed!

In the mean time here is a shot of mom bring a stick into the nest. Maybe for them to play with? Then she turned and looked right at me. I had been shooting pushed two stops so the young show up better but she was faded out in the sun..... oh well.
I have to get some work done around here so no owl watching today. Maybe tomorrow. I'd like to get pictures of the young ones when they just get out of the nest. Underdeveloped tails really make them look different. They are pretty close by the nest for only a short while then they are really hard to find as the trees leaf out.

A few more videos.

This next one is a bit graphic where one of the young tries to swallow a squirrel..... it was too big but not for lack of trying on the little owls part. If you are not in to this sort of nature show then skip this one.

If you haven't watch many of these then make sure you do watch this one.
So when you are new to this hanging on to a branch thing then sometime you find yourself a bit upside down. Sorry about all the side comments from fellow photographers........

Adult near nest. Peaceful.

It was much more stable today. Didn't seem to have any trouble hanging on well scratching, a behavior you see in the adults too. If you watch the previous video you will know of which I speak.

The last one from Friday when I last visited. It gets to busy during the weekends. I've had this place pretty much to myself the last 7 years but this might be my last season, just too many people know about it now and its hard to enjoy now. Anyway.
Looks like a foot cramp? Not use to holding on to a branch night and day for couple of days running.......

Awesome thread, thanks for posting it.

Looks like Barred Owl season 2018 is over. I didn't go there over the weekend and when I went on Monday the other two had left the nest and the trees are greening up so much that it all but impossible to get any good photos anymore.
It was fun and I'm a little sad that it is over, but then I really need to get a few things done around home rather then running off to visit the owls.
