Today in the shop (Refinishing a plate)

Spent a good deal of the morning refinishing this turned square plate.

My SIL got it at a resale shop but it was in need of refinishing. Sorry no before pictures. Anyway I deemed it worthy of saving. I do like the wood and an interesting shape piece to turn. I might make myself one someday.

So a few hours of my morning gone and not looking good for my afternoon projects due to rain in the forecast. Next up is a garden box to dig in and fill, not looking forward to that part of the project be the produce will be nice in the fall.

The plate was sent out the end of last week and arrived on Monday. It would appear she was pleased with the results:

"The real miracle in the package was, of course, whatever magic Edward performed on that humble maple wooden item...IT IS BEAUTIFUL to the eye and to the touch. THANK YOU THANK YOU, exactly what I was hoping for, except even better."

Another customer satisfied.

That plate appears to be shallow enough to make out of a single board. Roughly how big is it?

Yes they are from one board, I'd say 5-1/2 or 6 inches on the square. Not sure how one turns one but I'm sure the youtube people have someone showing us how. I did not want to try and remount it for sanding and am not even sure if that would work so all done by hand. I think the original finish was a spray lacquer so I had to remove it all..........

At last months meeting for the Las Vegas Turners they had Mike Jackowski there doing one his demos. He likes to demo square turnings usually with a lid also. The trick is just to spin it really fast ( like 3300 rpm ) so you don’t feel the air between the corners. It’s a tricky use of a spindle gouge. He does them in maple usually.
