Parts for the lathe duplicator

I have aquired a lot of Shopsmith tools and attachments from several sources over the last several years. It has taken me a while to sort all these items out. They had been just thrown in boxes and were all mixed up. I think I finnally have most of it doped out. I have found that I have a lathe duplicator, that is most of one. The only part missing is are the two brackets in the rear that mounts to the tubes and holds up the cross bar and the pattern. I spoke to the help desk and found that these are not stock items and have to be made up special at a rather high cost. They look rather simple from the exploded view, and should not be hard to fabricate locally. That is if I had dimensions. Would anyone happen to have one of those units that could give me the dimensions so I can make the two of them up?? Thanks; davevz

Rob, thanks a lot. The part number if you have an exploded view of the duplicator is number 15. It has a long back side which may be the seven inch side. Then it has a short top which comes across towards the front and then bends down for maybe an inch? The bottom bends again from the back towards the front and mounts to the tubes. Is that the part that you dimensioned?? I really appreciate your taking the time to do this. davevz

I just had sense enough to look at your picture. What you have4 shown is the portion that goes under the tubes and fastens to the part I am taking about. The part I need also has a support or some kind of brace that is in the back from about half way down the part to the bottom. Hope this helps.

there are at least 2 different versions of the lathe duplicator. the primary differences seem to be in the shapes of part 13 (Channel) and part 15 (support bracket) and whether or not part 14 exists.

on the one that i got with a '96 510, it uses the dual channel version of #13 (517938), does not use #14, and has #15 (517977) support bracket assembly. that version of #15 has a square tube with a 90 bend for the lower portion. this duplicator is missing its S/N sticker but I think it is a '96.

on one that I just got while in FL, #13 (514715 including 2 of #14) is a single channel, #14 (514701) is the end caps for the channel, and #15 (514712) is a bent metal strip with a brace welded on at the lower 90 bend.

both of mine are in storage at the moment and I probably cannot get to them to make measurements before Sunday or Monday. if no one else posts measurements before then, I'll dig them out and make the measurements.

FWIW, the one in the recent lathe sale catalog looked to be the single channel version even though that one has the lower value part numbers.
SS did not include the lathe duplicator in the service parts sale this year.

iclark, thanks for responding. I have two Mark V's, one is an 83 500 with the table and tube updates and the other is a 93 510. The duplicator came with the 83, buit probably was purchased after that. It is the single channel type with a part number of 514712, the second one you discribed. I would rather just buy it from SS, but it is a special order item and they cost $47.50 a piece. That seems a little rich for me, for a piece of bar stock with a couple of bends in it. Time is not a problem, since I will not be using it real soon. I really appreciate you taking the time to check it out for me. I live in Fl. and aquired the first unit shortly after we moved down in 2003. There was a boat load of stuff that came with it, much of which I still don't know what it goes with. In the basic purchase there was the following SS equipment: Upgraded 500, Stand alone Pro-planner and Jig saw on power stands, a dust collector, Tenon master, Mortising system, Shaper, Drum sander, a couple of sanding discs, and a bunch of other parts that I still can't find a home for. Every now and then while looking through the catalog I find a purpose for another part I have. The second unit I recently aquired included with the 510, a Bandsaw, Jointer, Belt sander, Speed increased, Biscuit joiner, and a Cross-Cut sliding and a Rear Support tables. I was very fortunate in picking all this equipment up for about a quarter of what the new cost would have been. My son and I had a great cabinet shop in Ohio and I really missed that when we moved. I should be able to do about anything with what I have, it will just take longer with the set up times. Wish I had the space that I had up north, but I shure don't miss the weather. I want to throw out a "Welcome to the Forum" to both you and Rob. Hopefully we'll be hearing more from both of you.

That brings me to a question. Could both of you let us know what part of the world you call home? I know Dave moved South but where? Maybe you are a neighbor!

Hi Charlese; I moved from Ohio to Naples Florida in 2003. Wish I had done it sooner. Weather fantastic!! I am guessing that you are in California, so we would be long distant neighbors. The forum is great, and I appreciate the help. Davevz
