Does anyone know the size of the set screws used on the SS.

I don't bother trying to figure stuff like that out anymore. I bought an assortment of setscrews box at Harbor Freight for nine bucks, I always find one that will work, then I know the size, if I run out...lol

SS set screws are not all the same on the end. Some are cup, some are round, some are flat and some have brass tips depending on what they are used with. It appears that the HF product is all cup end.

Which I would grind flat 'usually'.

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate your replies. I see a lot of kits online and some are all metric and some are SAE. I guess I will go with SAE.

As has been mentioned, the shopsmith uses various styles of setscrews. You will not want to use cup versions most places unless that is what was used by shopsmith. Things like the saw arbors now use brass tipped set screws, and you certainly would not want to use cup set screws on the arbor........ Like wise other places.

You are better off spending the money and getting the right ones from shopsmith.

Yes I too have did my share of tip grinding but then I started ordering extra set screws from shopsmith to fill in between postage gaps and now have a stock pile of the right ones.

I revised a document done several years ago to highlight the set screws using the setscrew document by MickyD and some current info from Shopsmith Parts.

I have uploaded it to My Google Drive link at http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/viewt ... 90#p185690 under the folder titled "Drawings - Mark V & Mark 7"

It is small enough so I also attached it here. I hope you and perhaps others find it of benefit.

Remember the two related to the quill and quill advance mechanism are likely covered with putty and painted over, which you will have to pick out to remove them initially. Good idea to replace with putty when done.

Notice: Should you decide to print it, it will be necessary to select the option to have your printer scale the document to fit the paper size you have in your printer before printing it.

You did not say which SS you are looking for set screws for. The Model 10E & 10ER use a lot of set screws for the machine as well as the accessories. The Mark 5/V uses less for the machine but again they are needed for the accessories that attach to the Spindle. Attached is a PDF of the set screws used on the Model 10's and their accessories.

I believe this is complete but if anyone finds one missing from the list let me know and I will add it. The part numbers are only the ones used after the numbering change November 1, 1951. Prior to the numbering change there are multiple part numbers for the same size set screws used throughout the machine. The important information is the size and location used for the set screws. Remember this is for the Model 10's and their accessories.

For Mark 5/V set screw refer to the following document.
