length of lift assist?

I plan to build an undercarriage storage cabinet for my 520 that will hang on the lower tubes. I am also considering adding the lift assist hydraulic upgrade.

Does anyone with the lift assist have the distance the lift assist extends out from the right hand support leg? i.e., the distance I need to reduce the width of any undercarriage cabinet by so that it won't interfere with the lift assist?

While I can tell you that mine extends just under 17 inches from the base but that does not mean that it will on yours. The distance the lift extends from the base is determined by the individual gas cylinder and where on the bench tubes it is installed. The inner rod on the gas cylinder retracts when the SS is lowered from the drill press mode, how much it retracts varies by cylinder. There may be a tolerance for the cylinders but I do not know what that is. Also if the bench tube clamps are installed flush or a short distance from the base also effects the distance the lift extends. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Brenda. If I allowed 18 inches for the cylinder, do you think that would be reasonably safe? I could certainly allow more if need be.

It should be good but without any other data I hesitate to say yes.

Well, don't hesitate. If it doesn't end up fitting properly I plan to blame you for it anyway. I was running out of excuses for my regularly schedules mistakes...

I have two cabinets using up 30" so the 18" should be fine. IE 48" - 30" = 18".

thanks Ed, that's about what I was figuring as well. I'll post some pics once it is all built and assembled.
