Great work. Is the hexagon one hollowed out to extend to the side?

Hexagon is actually a septagon; 7 sides. It is hollowed out but not too far because there is a danger of breaking through the upper or lower surfaces so I chickened out early on the side of safety.

I have not a clue, but spalted poplar comes to mind.
