I recently acquired my dad's Shopsmith 10e which he bought used when I was a kid in the 70's. My kid brother (an auto mechanic) has no idea what might have happened to the tool rest assembly so I am searching for a replacement. I have the carriage that attaches to the bars but that is all. Does anyone know of a source to purchase replacements for these?

If you do not have one already get a copy of the Owner's Manual. It will help you identify which parts you need. The Model 10E and 10ER was a work in progress with changes made to the parts from the first 10E shipped out in October 1947 to the last ones made in 1953. As an example, need a Carriage Lock for the way tubes? There are two different locks and knowing which one will save you time, money and frustration. Not all sellers on eBay are as well versed in what parts go to which machine as the people you will find here. Check out the post by Everett Davis for Large Format Drawings, Illustrations and more for a lot of Shopsmith documents. He has some great information gathered together.

I keep hearing that you cam get 10er tool rests on ebay "all the time". But for what they want I may as well buy the whole machine and part it out. Ar
e there any other tool rests out there that will fit the er?

First which of the Lathe Tool Rest parts do you need? Is it the entire assembly, the 8" Tool Rest part # 105-1, the Arm part # 105-2, the Post part # 105-6 or the Collar part # 105-7 as shown below?

The good news is any Lathe Tool Rest assembly, or parts from it, made for the Model 10E or 10ER will fit. If you need just the 8" Tool Rest part # 105-1 any Model 10 or Mark5/V/7 one will fit even a brand new one from Shopsmith. The other parts are specific to the Model 10's. The 3 Set Screws are common 3/8"-16 x 1/2" or 3/8"-16 x 3/8" with cup heads.

The only one I see for sale on ebay today is way over priced in my opinion. I talked to a neighbor this morning who bought a 10E at a garage sale for $25 but it was missing Lathe parts also. He found another one at a garage sale for $25 that had the parts he needed. So that is a possible way to go in getting the parts you need and possibly some others you may want to keep.
