A Good Start

Hi guys,

I just purchased a 1970's era machine and am new to Shop Smith but not so new to woodworking. I want to get off on the right foot with my new-to-me machine and feel I need to look under the hood and everywhere else to be sure all is in good working order. It seems to run and look to be in very good shape. I'm looking for good instructions/photos for proper maintenance. I have the standard set-up with saw, sander, lathe, drill press. I have the original book and lessons but see little so far about maintenance. What can you recommend? Also, I'm also looking for a bargains on outfitting my machine, such as the belt sander attachment, but see on ebay it goes for nearly $300 + shipping. What's your advice for getting started the right way?

You are in the right place for help and assistance on upkeep and repairs. As far as add on accessories, be careful with ebay. Research the seller and ask questions before bidding. I have purchased many good items from ebay for the Shopsmith at reasonable prices however, now is not the time to try and save lots of money on ebay for SS accessories (summer is the best time for that) but pickings are also less.

Many woodworkers retreat to their garages and shops this time of year and get buisy with crafting and furniture making. (get excited about there equipment) Summer time, many of these same folks are gardening etc and the equipment sets. Often to the point where parts and accessories get listed on ebay.

I myself have sold SS accessories and parts on ebay only to regret it later and end up buying the same stuff back!

Have some fun on this forum, ask questions, post comments, etc. this is a great place to hang out while you are waiting for the glue to dry!

Thanks Doug, I enjoy reading about all the great projects. So, call me inept, but I'm having trouble finding detailed info with pictures/diagrams on maintenance. Can you point me to a specific post or web site?

Welcome to the forum!
I'm still a newbie too. The membership on the site can get you through about anything you can imagine.
Rick Davis has a great DVD through SS called The ShopSmith Journals.
I bought the DVD and the Help kit and they are a great combo to keep the Mark V maintained for a SS newbie like myself.
Paste wax too for the tables, surfaces, and rails of the Mark V.

Jacob Anderson sells DVD videos on Ebay on how to repair the headstock, 4 different types of motors and the bandsaw. I review the DVDs quite often before starting repairs on the headstock or bandsaw.
