Driving Two Belt Sanders On One Headstock

I am pretty sure you could build a sliding wooden mount that would allow you to mount the second sander on the way tubes and be able to slide it over to engage the power coupler. You might have to shorten the mounting tubes on the sander to allow for vertical room but that’s about it.

No because the drive shaft for the belt sander is two ended. You don't have to turn it around.

So I would need to build a shorty short enough that the quill feed with a drive hub attached would reach the belt sander?

YES Note Bold words. And two couplers as well.

I do not know if short enough is possible.(not near the shop)

I think one could make a mount for a second belt sander out of wood that would allow it to be located on the way tubes and connect to the power head. That would allow you the two sanders without shortening the tubes. Would not be difficult to make.

That's a phenomenal idea! I assume you are thinking that with the correct hubs and two standard couplers, you could drive them "in series" off of the aux spindle?

I wonder if a Shop Deputy would work. The tube length is 26" so that leaves 22" between base assemblies. The head stock takes up 14" approximately leaving 8" for the couplers/drive shafts. Actually that may be too short depending on the distance the drive shaft hangs over the way tubes and the length of the couplers, but it would be close.

But instead of making a bracket to slide on the way tubes as masonsailor2 suggested why not make a bracket for the sander to mount on the carriage? That way you could use any SS that has a carriage.

That's another GREAT idea and one Shopsmith should have offered!

I think you'd basically need a lathe duplicator table plus the special mounting base for storing SPTs and you'd have a carriage mountable SPT adaptor.

Rather than the actual lathe duplicator table, use the legs off one and plywood(or whatever) to mount the spt base.

You could also use the posts off of two standard lathe tool rests.
