Headstock issues after replacing Idler shaft etc

I have just spent a frustrating few hours with my 520, the Idler shaft had been leaking grease out of the front bearing by the eccentric, & the whole thing was running rough, so I ordered a new shaft with bearing & also the Poly-V & drive belts which to my knowledge were the originals. I bought the SS as a 510 at a garage sale & converted & upgrade to 520 etc, it gets lots of use!

OK so I followed the info on replacing the belts & the non existent info on the shaft, but it seemed straight forward & I got it done! The bearing on the old idler shaft was definitely shot.

Now the problem, when I align the shaft so that the the Poly-v belt runs correctly with no distortion & the end bearing is aligned with end of the casting, I can't get all 3 screws in the Control Handle plate because the Control Sheave (?) pushes the Quadrant with the Leaf spring to far to the right, If I move the Idler shaft bearing to the left so it is proud of the casting I can get the Control panel on OK, but now the Poly-V belt is misaligned & naturally stalls the motor!

Help please!!!

Simple solution I think. Remove the belt from the motor sheaves and push up on the belt to disgage the belt from the control and idler sheave. I push the the control and idler sheave closer together and then install the speed control assembly set to maximum FAST position. The High Speed set screw (#94) limits the quadrant movement.

Whenever I change the motor belt, I turn the high speed set screw in the Speed Control Assembly in (CW) 1 or 2 turns before installing. After installing the Speed Control Assy. and hooking the retaining loop, I back the high speed set screw back out. After turning the worm control gear and quadrant to make contact with the high speed set screw again, I make sure the control sheave does not touch the speed control bracket ( a really loud noise if motor is operating and contact is made). I do this check before the motor is installed. This can be checked with the motor installed but not operating, just do not turn the speed control handle toward SLOW without the motor operating.

I try to adjust the high speed set screw so the worm control shaft indent for the Speed Control Handle stops at 12:00 to allow easy installing of the Speed Control Handle and I have set the Speed Dial to FAST position.

Bill,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, I need to get this beastie working ASAP, I will check out what you suggest.

PS I did set the speed to high before I started the repairs.

Bill,

Your suggestion fixed the problem! The headstock has never run so smoothly & quietly. I found the easiest way to get the drive belt back on the large Motor pulley was to take out the screws on one side & back of the motor housing.
