Today in the shop (Shaper Origin made ZCI)

A while back I enlisted the forums help for some of the dimensions for this and finally got around making one. Still has to be tested but if my dimensions are right then it should work.

Sweet! Keep us posted Ed. What about the value of the shaper origin for home shop use? Haven't seen or read a lot about it of late. I might be incline to try and snag a used one later on.

Well I know I really like mine but it was pretty expensive new and likely to cost even more then I paid when they finally come on the market. Most likely out of the price range for most home shop situations.

What I like is the ability to go from a drawing to something like this zci being cut out without having to make a template or drawing a bunch of lines to work off of. If the drawing is correct then the part will be too.

It also lets me go at some projects like those mft like tops I've made with much better and faster results then if I were to attempt to hand drill them, ie they are too large for the shopsmith to drill all the holes.....

As far as the used market I have seen 2 for sale, one I'm pretty sure the guy got to resell as it was NEW never been used. The other the guy played with it but needed the money more then the tool. In both cases they wanted more then what I paid so they were wanting to make a profit off the sale.

No idea yet as to when these will come to market and what the price will be. I've seen guesses at $2200 to $2400 so going by my golden rule of used tools that would put a used market at $1200 or more. Again that is pretty steep. But these are just speculations.

So anyway I hope to get to mount the zci today to see if it fits. Don't think I'll do any cutting as I don't have a project lined up just now that requires its use.

Well one error came to light right away. The hole to square end is in the wrong place. So I've fixed the drawing and will use the shopsmith to drill the hole in the correct location. The other hole will be used for hanging it on my pegboard, a feature not a mistake...... well that is another way to look at it.

Progress report:

New hole is in and the screw angle added to the holes.

As I knew from the start this was not going to be thick enough, got to love that undersized plywood. So my plan was to add a spacer below the insert. That was today's project.

Using the SO I cut some shelf liner to use as a spacer. Used the included engraver bit which work pretty well. I have a new bit on order that will more then likely work better for these sorts of projects but who knows when it will get here and I'm wanting to get this done so went with what I had.

Not sure if I will just slip it in and put the insert on top or if I will attach it to the insert. About out of time today unless I can get back to it tonight so the next part is the test to see how I want to proceed.

It has a little curl left from the roll it came on so we will see how that flattens over night.

Hello:

I own the shaper origin. Do you happen to have the SVG file I could use to make my own? I was just thinking about making a few more inserts as my current one is starting to wear out. How are you liking the origin? I'm still getting my feet wet with it.

Ed, maybe you should put a "price tag" on these.

For those of us who do not have a need for svg files, maybe you should put a price tag on blank inserts (1/2" baltic birch.
