Just got a Shopsmith...help!

Hello everyone. I've always wanted to up my wood working game and I had a nice guy give me this piece of equipment. The problem is I have no manuals nor do I know if I have all the parts. Can anyone help me out with what I have and what I need to get started? I've included pics if you need better shots let me know. Thanks in advance.

The pictures did not post. There is a size limit for pictures. You do get an error message if the picture does not meet the size limit but it is not obvious. The limit is 2050 X 1180 pixels and no more than 2MB file size. I just resize all my pictures to 1024 X 768 and they easily meet the file size.

I'm failing at resizing the pictures. Sorry about that but in the link below is a part I found inside that's broken. When you turn the machine on it hums like it's bound up. I pulled the inspection cover and found this.

I recommend you get a complete 'new' speed control.

However if you remove what you have and post pix, we may be able to make that less $painful$.

What JPG is referring to is you may only need to replace the quadrant of the speed control. Pictures of the entire speed control assembly will tell.

You said it "hums" when it is turned on. Is the motor turning? Remove the two screws to the belt cover and slide it out of the way. Check the belts to see it they turn freely. An easy way to do it would be to put on a sanding disk and turn it by hand. The upper belt should turn but because of the broken Speed Control part the sheaves that make up the pulley on the mid shaft (called the idler shaft) may be too far apart to turn the lower "V" belt. Make sure that belt is not binding anywhere before turning on the motor again to check if it runs.

Realize that excessive(too long/too often) 'humming' may cause permanent damage.

Now that said, I suggest trying to run the motor with the motor belt removed.

It may be that the internal start switch in the motor is not making contact to start the motor. It only needs to be tried once!

IF this be the case, blowing out the motor from the vent holes MAY fix it. If not disassembly will likely be in order. Sometimes(wishful thinking?) rapping on the motor case will dislodge whatever is preventing the contacts from closing.

BTW a not uncommon problem.
