First Time ShopSmith owner, machine in pieces

I've been wanting a shopsmith for a long time, but could not afford it. And then just the other day A co-worker of mine said "I've got a shopSmith I'll sell you for a hundred bucks." The only catch was he had acquired it from a man who had taken apart the motor because it was having some sort of issue. He didn't know what the issue was he couldn't tell me anything about why the motor was taken apart, but he recommended that I just buy a new motor and presto! Well, I'm too broke for that. The windings look good the bearings seem okay, but I have absolutely no idea how to put this thing back together. Is there any resource that I can get that will show me the tear down procedure and show me how to maybe assemble this motor? I did download the parts list, but it is pretty rudimentary. I'm looking for something like a maintenance bible.

Several things need to come first

What motor do you have?

Make a small size picture 750 K in size or so of the motor nameplate and attach it to this thread using the upload attachment link below the post.

It is a two step process. First you have to upload it allowing the website to validate its not too large in size of file or is too wide or tall in pixels.

It will tell you it is over size if it is.

Once it accepts it you can then attach it to your post


The photo will get us started. Dependent on what model shopsmith you have, there will be a number of motors that could be in play.

Download it and it will help you get oriented in the Mark 5 / Mark V lineage. Photo's are hot linked back to thread posts where topics were discussed about the respective photos.

There is a folder called motors. Some foundations are there, but not a motor Bible. I seek to write one and there is a preliminary draft of the concept of one but it is not fleshed out yet

Some things there may help you. The single most important part relative to common motor issues surround the motor start circuits.

They may be a spinning centrifugal spring loaded switch or a motor start relay.

The contacts of a motor start switch can get blocked by debris between the contacts or in the return spring rotating mechanism.

That prevents them from closing when the motor spins down and leaves the motor start circuit (required for starting) out of the power on circuit.

The motor hums, but will not start
because only the run windings have power. Don't leave it powered on in that state or you can overheat and melt the run windings.

That should get you some basic info while we await photo of your motor nameplate.

Although a Mark VII, the basic details are the same, the actual parts may vary. Hope this helps. Ignore the later stuff that pertains ONLY to the Mark VII.
