At least I'm making sawdust

Post by robinson46176 »

I didn't drop this big Cottonwood tree, the power company dropped it for a good friend of our son. It was too close to his house and septic and the power company was willing to drop it for free since it was close enough to get their lines if it went down in a storm or if a storm even broke limbs out of it. Some of the biggest limbs I'm cutting up are up to 16". The bottom of the log is 48" and had no limbs for at least the first 30'. The total height was 130' (It's shorter now :D ).
The smaller and more crooked limb wood I'm cutting into firewood. Yes I know that many don't like cottonwood for firewood but I've burned some along for many many years and find it "acceptable". My only firewood criteria is that it be flammable and preferably free. :)
That log will have to be quartered to fit on my small bandsaw mill.
I plan to saw the bulk of the log into 1" x 8"s for vertical board & batten siding.
I will cut the larger/better limb wood and upper logs into some pallet lumber and material for some 3 sided horse shelters (horses don't like the taste of it and so don't chew on it). I also want some of it cut into gate slats for making a batch of new gates for the same reason. If I need more I have quite a few cottonwood trees in my woods but they are much smaller. They run 20" to about 26" trunk diameter. There is another huge tree where I'm cutting this one at but it was far enough from the road that the power company would not drop it. I could drop it but I'm sure part of it is hollow, one side has old damage and I would have to drop it between his house and a 1,000 gallon propane tank. Such trees can be a little tricky and I'm not as brave as I used to be... :D I'll cut about anything out in the woods but...
Diana is standing behind the stump here for scale.

You should save some short pieces for bowls, farmer, especially with Halloween coming up. You could turn some dandy witch’s cauldrons. And I know that you have several of these big funny-looking lathes. :D
