Keyboard Acting Up

Post by dusty »

Is there anyone other than me having trouble with their computer keyboard.

My delete key does not delete and sometimes pressing it inserts a "." each time I click the key.

Before you tell me I have a bad keyboard - I can replicate this using three different keyboards.

This seems to have begun with a Windows Update but I have done a recovery and the symptoms did not change.

I am no computer wiz but did you try looking at the keyboard set up in the control panel. I believe there are several setups and they change the way the key are mapped. It has been a long time since I played with a windows machine I use opensuse.

Microsoft hosed a lot of Windows computers with the October update. Then, when the complaints rolled in, they did an emergency update which hosed a lot more computers with new and different problems. And, worst of all, their "go back" was also hosed so it couldn't take you back to when the computer worked.

The first defective update deleted a lot of people's files from their computers. Their emergency "fix" caused conflicts with drivers already working on the computer before the "fix". I'm reading a lot of these problems were conflicting with keyboard drivers on HP computers, and also some on other brands.

One company I'm familiar with was able to fix their HP computers only by upgrading from the hosed Win 10 setup to an older Win 7 setup with Microsoft updates turned off.

If you have an HP computer, there is a remote chance that this could be your issue. If so, you can try checking HP's site for newer keyboard drivers, reload the computer with Win 7 or some other operating system (if you are using Win 10 currently), or, wipe the computer and reinstall Win 10 with Microsoft updates turned off.

Check the website of your computer manufacturer for help on this, and also on Microsoft's site for more information.

It isn't likely that your computer is the only one affected as Microsoft had a really bad month for their update.

Thanks for the inputs.

I may not have found the cause of my keyboard issues but I learned something anyhow. I did not realize that every time I load (reload) Sketchup I create a new restore point. This is probably obvious to most but it wasn't to me.

I have been playing with Sketchup for a couple weeks now and I just may have introduced this problem myself.

It now appears that Sketchup and restore points had nothing to do with my problem. However, I will most likely never know what the issue was. My "keyboard problem" has been resolved (disappeared without explanation). Those solutions always bother me.

Gary mentioned a recent Microsoft update (1803 - KB4462933) which was installed (to my desktop) on 10/28. My problem occurred before that so Microsoft cannot be blamed for this.

I don't know BUT I'll not complain...not until it returns.

I was having problems typing and clicking links for most of October. I don't type that fast but on some sites (like gmail for one example) I was always typing half a sentence ahead of the screen. At its worst I could type a short sentence and have to wait maybe 10 seconds to see it. Some links I would have to click on 2 or 3 times. Pages were loading slow. I thought I must have some kind of mal-ware but everything I checked said I didn't have a problem. On this laptop I am running Windows 10 and was using Firefox for a browser. I kept digging and finally gave up and just down-loaded the latest version of Opera Browser (I've used it in the past too). Bang!!! Problems all gone and the difference in speed is really noticeable. I have not gone back to try Firefox again yet but I did see an update for it a few days ago. My other laptop is running Ubuntu Linux and it just works, it always works...
Except... That machine is 32 bit and it will now not automatically upgrade to the latest 32 bit Ubuntu. I saw a work around but have not studied it yet. It is fairly fast on Linux but it is older and does have a slower processor and less memory.
I'm quite happy with this version of Opera and right now see no reason to use anything else.
I still have no idea just what exactly was causing my initial problem. (shrug)

Ubuntu is only doing 64 bit versions now, but Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu, is still putting out 32 bit versions. :)
