It is interesting that they were listed as 10E's instead of 10ER's since they have parts that are mostly found on 10ER's in the US. Later headstock, short base, 2 bolt headrest, etc. Please do take a lot of pictures of the different parts and assemblies to help us identify them compared with their US counterparts. I know that can be a tedious endeavor as I am doing it with one of the original 250 Model 10E Shopsmiths that were made in 1947 but I feel it is worth taking the time to to it. One curious item I noticed on your 10E is the knob being used as the quill lock. Could it be a non-standard replacement for a lost part? If you have questions on how to best restore any parts or other questions you can get great answers here.

Hi,
I've only just dove into the shopsmith scene picking up a 10e out of a shed in mainland nsw. From what I can see it is almost complete missing one the mitre huge and the blade guard. My question is in regards to the statement about australian imports, do they start at A500 or up to A500. I ask because mine is stamped 180 so I'm confused as to how to date the machine.

Thanks to anyone that can help.

I sent you a private message. Best estimate on Date coupled with Magna history, private interviews recorded, Magna Newsletters and information from George Stevens in Australia, yours is 1950.

To our collective knowledge Magna started their production numbers with 1001 in 1947. There were tens of thousands made in California, before any exports were made to Australia. I even found documents and photos where units were being exported to Hawaii (before Hawaii became a State)

Serial numbers in Australia was supposed to follow a sequence with an A prefix Placed on the plate, but the numbers weren’t followed. Even the size of the numbers in Australia were smaller point size for Australian machines with numbers assigned and stamped in Australia.

They were shipped without motors and fitted with Australian motors, even switches on arrival.

That happened in early 1950.
