Structual mod to Shop B!

I have two shops in my basement. My main Shop (Shop A) houses my shopsomith, grizzley band saw, powermaric and delta lathes and a few small tools. Shop B is the old part of the basement and housed until last week my 1964 Craftsman table saw. That saw had a 52 inch Vega fence that I installed. The fence rails strattled a lolly column, restricting the width of the wood I could cut! The saw is dying and I decided to put it down. I have a 3 hp 36 inch with extension Sawstop boxed in my garage. Tomorrow starts the renovation to remove the three columns and install microlam beams. Have to also move an old cast iron sewer pipe- that will be messy as it actually runs slightly uphill. I wonder what might be hiding in that section? I doubt I will post pics of the pipe r and r!

I had to break down my Powermatic cabinet saw to get it into my basement. It’s a walkout, but access is via a narrow walkway with several steps, and so the move still wasn’t easy! Below are some pics of a rig that I cobbled together to lift the base off of a convertible hand truck. Getting it onto the hand truck was a bit easier, as I have an electric attic hoist above my garage.

But if you already have a big lathe in your basement, you must have it figured out. What’s your plan?

Well my plan is not to get hurt!.. A few years ago I manipulated my 17" Grizzly band saw down the basement stairs alone (about 342 pounds). I was 52 then, now 60. My occupation still requires me to do some very heavy lifting (I'm a funeral director, and people are not any lighter today, if you catch my drift1), but this time I'll grab one of my sons to help, maybe two! I can still outlift either one of them (or so I tell myself). Before the saw comes in, the lolly columns have to come out. My wife is making me wait until after Christmas for that part of the project... Darn
