I bought one when my planer did not come with one. Here is a drawing I made of mine, in case you want to try to make one.

I bought a used planer recently. It didn't have the gauge with it anymore so I ordered one from Shopsmith. I pulled the blades from my planer and sent them in to be sharpened. They came back a couple of days ago. I used the gauge to set them and it worked perfectly.
I'd just order a new gauge and be done with it.
