An arbor question for you knowledgeable SS'ers.
I recently acquired a box of Shopsmith/Magna parts. Included is a half inch arbor with no square shoulders to hold the arbor while tightening the nut. Perfectly smooth...it does have the 5/8 bore for the spindle...anyone heard of or seen one of these? Thanks for any help. Rocky

Yes, they were made by Magna. There are lots of them out there. Not sure when this changed. Maybe early on with the Magna MK 5. Chapmanruss will reply with the change over.

You knew I would have the answer or a least part of it.
The original 1/2" (P/N 102-35X) and 5/8" (P/N 126-1X) Arbors that Magna Engineering made for the Model 10E did not have the wrench cuts in the base. It's why you see most of them with some kind of wrench marks on the base. Magna realized it would be beneficial to have the wrench cuts in the base to make tightening and loosening the nut easier. As to when this happened I am unsure but the May 1949 catalog still shows the original version although they didn't always use a picture of the newest versions in the catalogs. As Magna was getting ready to introduce the Mark 5 they changed the 1/2" (new P/N 22 030) and 5/8" (new P/N 22 031) Arbors which added the "keyed" washer and went from a 1/4" set screw to the 5/16" set screw used on almost everything to this day.
