Ripping 45* Miters / Throat Plate Strike

I own a Mark V 500. I am working in a wheelchair.
I tried to set my saw up to rip 45* miters. I stopped and stood down until I got help. When I tilted the table down to achieve a 45* angle,, the throat plate struck the blade. I removed the throat plate to see how much clearance I had. With the throat plate out I still had almost zero clearance.
NOTE. The arbor I am using is for a 5/8” arbor hole. However it is NOT the correct arbor for the 500. It is for a larger saw deck. When I bought my machine used it had many screws, washers, & bolts the wrong size.. From what I could see the proper size arbor "smaller" for the 500 saw deck would only make the problem worse. I also have the original arbor that is 1 1/4” but the blade was so rusted I threw the blade out. I am missing something simple but can’t figure it out.
How on earth do you rip 45* angles with a throat plate in?

You will need to adjust the quill and/or table position to center the blade in the throat plate.

With the correct arbor for your machine and then adjusting the quill as Brenda said.

Hi Thom,
Do you have a copy of the manual and/or the book Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone? If not you can look under the Maintenance and Repair section for Shopsmith Large Format Drawings, Illustrations and More by Everett Davis. This will be one of the first three topics. If you haven't looked in it before you will find a wealth of information on the Shopsmith tools. Some are directly linked there and others are on “My Google Drive” with documents too large to be directly linked. Early restored digital copies of the Mark 5 manuals are there. Since you have a Mark V 500 with the original table system the operation is the same as those early manuals. If you look at the first ones disregard the high speed lock. The current edition of the book Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone is available digitally on the Shopsmith website. I also have extra copies of the 2nd edition (copyright 1955) if you need one. The Shopsmith can do so much and the manual and book can show you how to get the most out of your Mark V. Of course we are always here to help with questions.

Yes I have both of these books thank you much! Learning how to properly use a ShopSmith is a blast thank you. Learning to use one while sitting in a wheelchair is a whole different world. So far so good. I am a big safety guy so when in doubt, I stand down. I doubt I would have ever thought to adjust the quill. Now it makes total sense.

I was wrong, I may have a different book. The book I have is a self study 3 ring binder. The name on the book is...
ShopSmith power tool woodworking system. The author is different as well. Is this the same book you are making reference too? I looked on line, looks different to me. What I have is a project book. I will go find your reference.

There are actually three books, the Manual, the Self Study Guide and the book Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone (PTWFE). Sorry I neglected to mention the Self Study Guide. Since it sounds like you do not have it take a look at the book PTWFE online and see if it is something that you would find useful to have. As I said I have extra copies of the 2nd edition and could drop one by for you. Instead of having a printed copy you can always reference the online copy. Below is a link to PTWFE online.

Thank you so much for your intel. This is great thank you. Since the book is available on line I will use that for now. I do much better holding my iPad than books. It’s a weight issue. Now don’t get me wrong I LOVE books. I was able to set up my original iPad on a totally pro wheelchair mount in the garage. That has worked out really well for reference. I am making slow progress learning how to work in my powerchair is a hoot! Learning to run a ShopSmith in a chair is spooky.
However, feel free to stop by or drop by anytime you like. As long as it’s afternoon. I am sure we would find something to chat about. I can be a chatterbox.....
