Bench and Way Tubes
I have heard discussion about the 10/10E tubes being thicker walled (heavier) than those used on the Mark Vs.
Thus my question.
Are 10/10E tubes totally compatible with the Mark V (excluding any discussion about diameter)?
The reason I ask: I recently acquired a near new set of tubes on EBay (just over $100 + $80 for shipping) and they are noticeably heavier than my original tubes. Could these be 10/10E tubes?
I bought tubes to facilitate the conversion of my Shorty back to standard Mark V length. The conversion has gone well but slow. The Shorty is "no longer" a multi function Shopsmith. It has instead taken on the role of a variable height work bench which I think will work on well in my new down sized work shop. I did not realize just how necessary a work bench space was needed. Since my move to this new shop, I have been using aShopsmith (usually the Shorty) for table space.

Re: Bench and Way Tubes
The 10e/er's only have way tubes, the bench is wood, so there is only the one length.
Diameter is not a concern, as you say, the extra "meat" is on the inside.

Re: Bench and Way Tubes
What is the ID Dusty? The od and length equal a M5/V way tube.

Re: Bench and Way Tubes
I thought the early Greenie tubes were thicker than the later ones. IIRC, there was a discussion on the forum about that a few years ago.

The ID of the two accessible tubes (Way Tubes) is 1.55".JPG wrote:What is the ID Dusty? The od and length equal a M5/V way tube.
The other measurement significant to my question is that of length. Two tubes Bench Tubes) are 3/4" longer than the other two tubes (Way Tubes).
Maybe these tubes just feel heavier as I get older.

Re: Bench and Way Tubes
Brenda, If I recall the discussion early Greenies had 1-7/8" bench tubes and 1-3/4" way tubes.

Re: Bench and Way Tubes
Maybe more true than I would like to admit. I debated not reinstalling the lift assist (in favor of under side storage) until I attempted to put the Mark V in drill press mode. I used to do it no sweat but no more.dusty wrote:The ID of the two accessible tubes (Way Tubes) is 1.55".JPG wrote:What is the ID Dusty? The od and length equal a M5/V way tube.

I'm quite sure that someone has been twiddling the knobs on the gravity control system...

Re: Bench and Way Tubes
Moving a 10-ER to vertical can be a bit more of an effort than you might expect. Back when I got my 10-ER I was rather surprised at how much more work it was to load to haul home. I knew it was heavier but did not expect it to be that much heaver. That is part of the reason I have decided to make it my semi-dedicated lathe.
With my double drill press I never lift up any of my others to use them vertical any more. I'm going to move one Mark V to the house rehab project in the next county while doing that project and I might lift that one vertical a few times there.
We are still in the clean up and early demolition stage there, not cutting new stuff there yet.
I would take my 510 there to use but the risk of someone breaking in there and loading up tools is higher there than at home. I would hate to lose a Mark V but would hate losing my 510 more.
The SS will be working like a SS was intended to be used there. It will be serving about all of the functions designed into it. Back when I was buying stuff I kept 2 jointers and sold a couple. I gave my son one nice older SS and gave him a jointer to go with it but kept one for me. I never use it since I have a long bed 6" stand alone jointer but I will use the SS one now at the job-site. I will keep my SS band-saw at home but load it in when I need it at the site. It's light enough to just sit it in when I want it.
On that job site I will cover the first floor windows inside with white paper so nobody can see in but I will still get light.
